He's free. He's out of his cage.
As part of Geeked Week, Netflix has released a new 90-second trailer for The Sandman, the long-awaited TV adaptation of the classic DC Comics/VERTIGO series created and written by Neil Gaiman. Unlike the initial teaser trailer, we get to see more of the show's first season, which will adapt the comic book's first two storylines, "Preludes & Nocturnes" and "The Doll's House".
The trailer opens with Morpheus/Dream (Tom Sturridge) alone in a desolate landscape with his helm. In a voiceover, he says with an accent, "I am the King of Dreams, ruler of the nightmare realm."
In a fleeting glimpse, we see the occult ritual by Roderick Burgess' coven that brings Morpheus to become imprisoned.
Next, we have a night meeting in a park between the mysterious Lady Johanna Constantine (Jenna Coleman) and immortal tramp Mad Hettie. Johanna Constantine asks, "What are you doing here, Hettie?"
"He's comin', innit he?" replies Mad Hettie.
"Who?"
"Morpheus. The Oneiromancer. You know, the Sandman."
"He's a fairy story, Hettie."
"He's no fairy story, he's back."
"Good to know," smiles Lady Johanna.
We then see a naked Morpheus, after escaping his prison. He's confronted by two police constables, who aim their weapons and demand that he open his hands. Morpheus obliges them, blowing a handful of dream dust at them. A bright vortex opens in mid-air and Morpheus enters it.
Next, we travel to Morpheus' realm, The Dreaming, where Morpheus is reunited with Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong), the librarian of the Dreaming. "Forgive me, Sire," she explains. "The palace, the realm. They are not as you left them. With you gone, the realm began to decay and crumble."
As we see fleeting glimpses of Morpheus' sister Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), his androgynous sibling Desire (Mason Alexander Park), and Doctor Destiny/John Dee (David Thewlis), Morpheus says in another voiceover, "The dreams and nightmares no longer seem to recognize their master. I will remind them." We then see him wearing his strange helm.
In a final scene, we see the back of escaped nightmare The Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook), who remarks to himself, "He's free. He's out of his cage." Blood appears to be coming from his unseen right eye.
One last shot shows Morpheus reunited with his emissary, Matthew the Raven (Patton Oswalt).
