DC CRIME Series Hosted by Jimmy Olsen in Development at HBO Max

Jimmy Olsen is getting his own true crime series. Well...DC crime at least.

Variety is reporting that a fictional "true crime" docuseries is being developed by DC Studios for HBO Max. Titled DC Crime, the series will be hosted by DC Comics character Jimmy Olsen, with actor Skyler Gisondo reprising his role from Superman (2025).

According to the article, the first season will focus on DC supervillain Gorilla Grodd, a longtime nemesis of The Flash.

Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault will serve as writers, executive producers, and showrunners on the series. James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios will also serve as executive producers, with DC Studios’ Galen Vaisman overseeing the production from Warner Bros. Television. Yacenda and Perrault created the critically-acclaimed Netflix show American Vandal, which parodied the true crime genre. The show aired for two seasons and won Peabody Award for best writing for a comedy series. The duo went on to create the Paramount+ mockumentary series Players, which was set in the world of eSports.

Created in 1938 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Jimmy Olsen first appeared in Action Comics (vol.1) #6 as an unnamed "office boy" with a bow tie until he was formally introduced as Jimmy Olsen on the Superman radio show The Adventures of Superman in 1940.  Jimmy first appeared as a named character in Superman (vol.1) #13 in 1941, where he became a cub reporter and photographer for the Daily Planet newspaper as a co-worker with Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Perry White.

Recently, Olsen's antics, glamorous lifestyle as Superman's pal, and strange transformations were depicted as a source of streaming-media ad revenue that was keeping the Daily Planet afloat. In Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen (vol.2), the 12-issue series explored Jimmy's siblings Janie and Julian, his family's historic relations with Lex Luthor's family, a plot involving the attempted murder and faked death of Olsen, and a marriage in Gorilla City that Jimmy subsequently forgot to annul. The series poked fun at DC Comics' own history, including a sequence in which Jimmy angered Batman by suggesting a phone-in campaign to decide whether Robin lived or died. By the end of the series, Jimmy received a new Signal Watch and became the publisher of the Daily Planet.

Created in 1959 by John Broome and Carmine Infantino, Gorilla Grodd first appeared in The Flash (vol.1) #106 as a hyper-intelligent telepathic gorilla able to control the minds of others. He and other gorillas gained sapience and psychic powers after an alien spaceship crashed in their area. The gorillas lived in peace until their home was discovered by explorers. Grodd forced one of the explorers to kill the alien and took over Gorilla City, planning to conquer the world. Solovar, King of Gorilla City, telepathically contacted Barry Allen to warn of the evil gorilla's plans, and Grodd was defeated. The villain managed to return again and again to plague the Flash and the hero's allies.

Most recently, in the "We Are Yesterday" storyline, Grodd appeared as a leading member of the Legion of Doom. He manipulated Air Wave into spying on the Justice League on his behalf, claiming that Air Wave was dying from "tachyon poisoning". Grodd later absorbed Omega energy from the rift created following Darkseid's death and dubbed himself "Gorilla God". However, Air Wave betrayed Grodd and defeated him with help from a group of heroes summoned from the past. Following his defeat, Grodd allied himself with Time Trapper and the World Forger, forming the Quantum Quorum to deal with Darkseid's return and the damage caused to the timestream.

The Titans Return to Happy Harbor in DC'S LEX AND THE CITY #1

If you ever get up to Happy Harbor, the cherry pie is worth a stop.

My second DC Universe story for DC Comics, "Together Again", was released this week as part of DC's new Valentine's Day anthology DC's Lex and the City #1. Featuring art by Serg Acuña, colors by Alex Guimarães, and lettering by Josh Reed, "Together Again" has four original members of the Teen Titans -- now adult Titans -- spending a guys' weekend in the wonderful and strange town of Happy Harbor, Rhode Island.

Returning to the Double H Diner, their former refuge from being teenaged superheroes, Dick Grayson, Wally West, Roy Harper, and Garth Curry reminisce about the original weekend they spent as teenagers helping the Justice League move from the League's original Secret Sanctuary headquarters hidden inside Mount Fox in Happy Harbor. However, it turns out Dick Grayson has an ulterior motive for the guys' weekend, involving a towering Kaiju monster named Raxodon.

Here's the official solicitation for DC's Lex and the City #1...

AS SUPERMAN FLEW AWAY YET AGAIN, I HAD TO WONDER…WAS I TRYING TO DESTROY HIM, OR WAS HE DESTROYING ME? Written by Brendan Hay, Sina Grace, Dave Wielgosz, Charles Skaggs, Callie C. Miller, Maggie Tokuda-Hall and More Art by Howard Porter, Serg Acuna, Stephen Byrne, Lisa Sterle, Leslie Hung, and More

It's Valentine's Day, which means that love and heartbreak are sweeping every city in the DCU! Lex Luthor laments over the one that got away–the big, ever-elusive Metropolitan man, Superman! Raven and Beast Boy embark on a romantic scavenger hunt across San Francisco (which just might be a trap)! And Damian Wayne runs a dating-advice gauntlet through Gotham City, organized by none other than the dating master himself, Tim Drake! Gather your pals, pour yourself a cosmo, and hit your nearest comic shop–DC'S LEX & THE CITY is coming this January!

THE FANDOM ZONE 269: "A New World, Part 4: Finale" Is Up!

"You want to hear a story? Okay, but before I start, I need you to do something first. I need you to stop crying. And I need you to believe in the impossible. Can you do that? Good. Your dad is fast, faster than the speed of sound. And the faster I go, the more the world slows down, but it wasn't always easy. When I was a kid, I lost the people I cared about most. I won't let that happen to you. That's why your mom and I, we need to do something impossible. Our family has been blessed with these amazing gifts. Maybe that speed shouldn't just belong to us anymore. My friend Oliver said that the lightning chose me. Well now, I'm gonna do the choosing. [...] Maybe if we share a piece of ourselves, we can break out of our old cycles of violence and pain -- create a new world for you, Nora, a better one. One where we can coexist -- all of us -- together. A world where nothing has to be impossible...as long as we believe in it."
-- Barry Allen to Baby Nora West-Allen, The Flash -- "A New World, Part 4: Finale"

Hello again, everyone! It's time for another new episode of The Fandom Zone Podcast!  This time, DJ Nik and I discuss "A New World, Part 4: Finale", the series finale of The Flash, featuring Grant Gustin as The Flash/Barry Allen, Candice Patton as Iris West-Allen, Rick Cosnett as Cobalt Blue/Eddie Thawne, and John Wesley Shipp as The Flash/Jay Garrick!

In this episode, DJ Nik and I talk about things like Nik being my podcast counselor, Nik's sports segment, the series finale not being particularly memorable, wondering why superhero TV shows can't have an epic battle between teams of superheroes and supervillains, the CW Arrowverse shows being stronger on emotional moments than superhero moments, why Carlos Valdes didn't return as Vibe in the finale, the various callbacks to the pilot episode from Season 1, the three people Barry gave super-speed to in the final moments of the series, some comics background on the Legion of Zoom, Eddie bringing the Reverse-Flash, Zoom, Savitar, and Godspeed back moments before each of them died, Eddie becoming Cobalt Blue, the Legion of Zoom being defeated way too easily and quickly, why the Legion of Zoom battle should've been the entire Part 3 of "A New World", Chillblaine serving no purpose whatsoever, Khione telling Barry to believe in the impossible, Eddie smashing the Cobalt Blue crystal and agreeing to help balance the Speed Force, Chester learning he's a Consciousness-Honed Universally Neutralized Kerry anomaly, the weirdness of adult Nora being there to see herself being born, the revelation that Khione didn't have much of a purpose, Caitlin coming back from the dead just in time for the show to end, the possibility of telling more stories with Avery Ho, Max Mercury and Jess Chambers, Joe proposing to Cecile even though all of us thought they were already married, why there needed to be one last Oliver Queen cameo, Allegra never getting a codename, The Flash not living up to its potential as a series and taking a creative nosedive when Eric Wallace became showrunner, our favorite quotes of the episode, our return to talking more Superman & Lois Season 3, and more!

THE FANDOM ZONE 268: "A New World, Part 3: Changes" Is Up!

"Don't worry, Cecile. You can do this."
"Right, and if by this you mean, just go on and astrally project myself into my future body, protect Barry from the Negative Speed Force, and save all of temporal existence, before coming back and teaching Jenna her multiplication tables, yeah, you're right. That's easy. Easy peasy."
-- Khione and Cecile Horton, The Flash -- "A New World, Part 3: Changes"

Hello again, everyone! It's time for another new episode of The Fandom Zone Podcast!  This time, DJ Nik and I discuss "A New World, Part Three: Changes", the twelfth episode of The Flash Season Nine, featuring Grant Gustin as The Flash/Barry Allen, Candice Patton as Iris West-Allen, Rick Cosnett as Eddie Thawne, and Jessica Parker Kennedy as XS/Nora West-Allen!

In this episode, DJ Nik and I talk about things like Nik's voice not wanting to cooperate, Inter Milan making it to the Champions League finals, 2049 Team Flash looking as young as 2023 Team Flash, why we switched over to discussing episodes of Superman & Lois, wondering if The Flash finale will stick the landing better than the Titans finale did, some rather complicated comics background on Cobalt Blue, Chester's reference to "being a black hole once", Eddie learning that he's not a guy named Dr. Malcolm Gilmore and that he's back from the dead, Eddie succumbing to the power of the Negative Speed Force, the show finally addressing the issue that Eddie sacrificed himself for nothing, the portals being tied to Eddie's emotional state, the lack of explanation for exactly how Eddie came back from the dead, wondering how the series will wrap up in a single hour with all the featured characters, wondering how 2023 Team Flash knew that Barry was in 2049, Cecile learning that her future self sucks at spending time with her family, wondering why 2049 S.T.A.R. Labs technology looks a lot like 2023 technology, Cecile getting her super suit and unimpressive codename Virtue, that awkward moment when 2049 Iris rejects Eddie wanting to replace her husband Barry, Barry learning that 2049 Iris still looks great, our favorite quotes of the episode, completing my physical media collection of The Flash on Blu-Ray, and more!

THE FANDOM ZONE 263: "The Mask of the Red Death, Part 2" Is Up!

"You took Grodd's mind away from me. You poisoned another Rogue to use against me. Why do you keep ruining my life, Flash?"
"You think it's bad now, wait until you taste the food at Iron Heights."
-- The Red Death and The Flash, The Flash -- "The Mask of the Red Death, Part 2"

Hello again, everyone! It's time for another new episode of The Fandom Zone Podcast!  This time, DJ Nik and I discuss "The Mask of the Red Death, Part 2", the fifth episode of The Flash Season Nine, featuring Grant Gustin as The Flash/Barry Allen, Javicia Leslie as The Red Death & Batwoman, and the return of David Sobolov as the voice of Grodd!

In this episode, DJ Nik and I talk about things like the two of us looking forward to the Oscars, director Rachel Talalay directing episodes of Doctor Who and Doom Patrol, Javicia Leslie coming very close to matching her horrible overacting in "Part 1", why it was a mercy to end the Red Death story arc now instead of letting it run for the entire season, being relieved that Joe gets to walk away from the show with Jenna instead of being killed off, some comics background on Grodd, wondering how the CCPD afforded a satellite, not getting any explanation for why Ryan Wilder disappeared, wondering how Ryan learned that Red Death was in Central City, Batwoman vs. Red Death, the super-speed battle between the Flash and Red Death, the underwhelming defeat of Red Death, wondering what happened to Red Death's Rogues after they took over CCPD headquarters, Barry pointing out that Khione has nothing to offer in a fight, Khione waking Chillblaine from his coma by kissing him, wondering why Red Death didn't kill the Flash after defeating him, Batwoman's homage to the Adam West version of Batman, Grodd signing on with Red Death after being completely forgotten about by Barry and Team Flash, wondering why Grodd didn't just ask Barry for help finding Grodd's fellow gorillas, Nik wanting to see Grodd on the big screen, Ryan Wilder not having any training to become Batwoman, Cecile's tingling Joe-Sense, Cecile staying in Central City to play superhero while Joe and Jenna move out to the country, wondering what's causing Cecile's mental powers to keep increasing, Barry making the effort to reach out to Mark, Barry taking over for Joe as Pep Talk Guy, what Iris brings to the table, Mark and Khione taking over as the new "will they or won't they" couple from Chester and Allegra, Iris becoming pregnant three months earlier than Barry's notebook about the future said she would, our favorite quotes of the episode, Nik talking William Hartnell stories on Next Stop Everywhere, wondering if Hazard will be next episode's Big Bad, and more!

THE FANDOM ZONE 262: "The Mask of the Red Death, Part 1" Is Up!

"You want to know who I am? I am the last glimmer of crimson a killer sees before he draws his final breath. I am vengeance. I am the night. I am...the Red Death."
-- The Red Death, The Flash -- "The Mask of the Red Death, Part 1"

Hello again, everyone! It's time for another new episode of The Fandom Zone Podcast!  This time, DJ Nik and I discuss "The Mask of the Red Death, Part 1", the fourth episode of The Flash Season Nine, featuring Grant Gustin as The Flash/Barry Allen, Javicia Leslie as The Red Death, and the return of Paul Anthony as Rainbow Raider!

In this episode, DJ Nik and I talk about things like Nik and I being sympatico on our Oscar picks, my theory about Red Death's TV origin mostly being validated, wondering what is up with Javicia Leslie's extreme overacting, how Javicia Leslie's performance compared to her performance on Batwoman, Jenna Marie West finally appearing on The Flash for the first time since "A Girl Named Sue" in 2020, some comics background on Rainbow Raider, Paul Anthony returning as Rainbow Raider for the first time since Season 1, being thankful that Iris wasn't fooled by Red Death Ryan Wilder pretending to be Batwoman Ryan Wilder, Red Death being an unreliable narrator, Owlman from the Crime Syndicate, the clever misdirection of Red Death's armor being empty inside, Barry getting pissed that Chillblaine was left behind to die at the hands of Red Death's Rogues, why the director should've been too embarrassed to include Javicia Leslie's over-the-top cliffhanger rant in the final cut, there being no crying in supervillainy, good acting making bad dialogue sound halfway decent, Joe going house-hunting without telling Cecile, Cecile going off to play superhero without a costume or codename to conceal her identity, wondering why Joe and Cecile didn't decide to move out so Barry and Iris could move into their old home like The Book said so, Nik crushing on Danielle Cecilet, Chester having a CB radio in 2023, Allegra finally wanting to discuss her relationship with Chester right in the middle of another crisis, still wondering what Khione brings to the table as a character, our favorite quotes of the episode, The Fandom Zone Podcast discussing Justice League Dark before Nik's Happiness in Darkness: The Superhero Movie Podcast, Joe's pep talks always being good for Barry, and more!

THE FANDOM ZONE 261: "Rogues of War" Is Up!

"Everything they've stolen -- the Roemer accelerator battery, the sonic gauntlets...Now a temporal scanner? They're all components you'd need to build a Cosmic Treadmill."
"Do I want to know what that is?"
"It's a machine that uses kinetic energy to open quantum wormholes in space and time, which is a lot of power in the wrong hands."
"Yeah...I didn't."
-- Barry Allen and Kristen Kramer, The Flash -- "Rogues of War"

Hello again, everyone! It's time for another new episode of The Fandom Zone Podcast!  This time, DJ Nik and I return to The Fandom Zone to discuss "Rogues of War", the third episode of The Flash Season Nine, featuring Grant Gustin as The Flash/Barry Allen, Andy Mientus as Pied Piper, Javicia Leslie as The Red Death, and the introduction of Alexandria Wailes as Murmur!

In this episode, DJ Nik and I talk about things like Nik keeping me straight on my Oscar picks, why we didn't record "Hear No Evil" as planned, my grading The Flash on a very low bar since Eric Wallace became showrunner, wondering why Barry was involved in a DOD facility heist without wearing a mask to conceal his identity, wishing the Rogues on Barry's team were classic villains like Captain Cold and Heat Wave, some background on Khione in Greek mythology, some comics background on The Fiddler and Murmur, wondering how Murmur eats with his mouth sewn shut, Edgar Allan Poe being the OG goth icon, Nik loving Hartley because he's irritating, Hotness calling out Barry for not trusting the Rogues, Barry being a control freak yet again, why this group of Rogues works well with Barry, Chester getting the icy treatment from Allegra, Iris finally learning how to cook, wondering what Khione brings to the table as a character, my having a soft spot for the movie Sky High, why Iris needs to relax about not being having time to pursue her dreams after she becomes a mother, wishing we could've seen Chester talking to Luke Fox, how Red Death gets her Rogues to do what she wants, Chillblaine flipping from Team Flash to Team Red Death, the reveal of the Red Death's identity, my theory why Red Death wants to build a Cosmic Treadmill, our favorite quotes of the episode, watching Yellow Submarine on Drunk Cinema, waiting for Joe and Cecile's baby to appear "missing" on milk cartons, and more!

THE FANDOM ZONE 260: "Wednesday Ever After" Is Up!

"Thank God it's Thursday. You wouldn't even believe all the stuff we tried."
"Once we even tried connecting the battery to the particle accelerator. After fifty-eight time loops, you kinda throw caution to the wind."
-- Iris West-Allen and Barry Allen, The Flash -- "Wednesday Ever After"

Hello again, everyone! It's time for another new episode of The Fandom Zone Podcast!  This time, DJ Nik and I return to The Fandom Zone to discuss "Wednesday Ever After", the first episode of The Flash Season Nine, featuring Grant Gustin as The Flash/Barry Allen, Candice Patton as Iris West-Allen, and the introduction of Richard Harmon as Captain Boomerang II/Owen Mercer

In this episode, DJ Nik and I talk about things like neither of us being fans of time-loop episodes, Nik being surprised by the reveal of the Red Death at the end of the episode, finally getting a lot of characterization between Barry and Iris as a couple, being surprised that we finally got a decent episode of The Flash again, some comics background on the second Captain Boomerang and the Red Death, wondering if we'll ever get an animated version of Dark Nights: Metal, Barry being so afraid of losing Iris yet again that he created a notebook of what's coming up for both of them in their future, Barry being able to phase a nuclear explosion so it doesn't harm anyone with radiation or a shockwave, Iris relying on the time-loop to save herself a hangover, my being tired of seeing Barry Allen being written as Peter Parker instead of Barry Allen, Barry naturally turning to Joe for advice, wondering if we'll ever see Joe and Cecile's daughter again, my preferring Frost as Killer Frost, wanting to see Chester become his superpowered alias Chunk at least for one episode, Cecile being Barry Allen's lawyer in the 1980s comics, Captain Boomerang not being Big Bad material, realizing that Red Death won't be Bruce Wayne, our favorite quotes of the episode, the plot synopsis for "Hear No Evil", why we decided to talk The Flash Season 9 for the next several episodes, and more!

First Trailer for THE FLASH Teases Michael Keaton's Return as Batman

Batman returns...this June.

During Sunday's broadcast of Super Bowl LVII, which had the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35, Warner Bros. Pictures released the first trailer for The Flash, the upcoming film adaptation of the DC Comics superhero directed by Andy Muschietti, played once again by Ezra Miller.

Loosely based on DC Comics' event storyline Flashpoint, worlds collide in The Flash when Barry Allen uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no superheroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian…albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?

The 2 minute, 50 second trailer opens with the Flash, sporting a new costume, arriving at his childhood home at night. We hear a voiceover from none other than Michael Keaton as Batman/Bruce Wayne, making his first appearance back in the role since 1992's Batman Returns, say, "Tell me something. You can go anywhere. Another timeline. Another universe. So, why do you want to stay and fight to save this one?"

Barry replies, "Because this is the one where my mom lives," referencing the death of his mother, Nora Allen (Maribel Verdú), as depicted in Flashpoint. "I'm not gonna lose her again." We see glimpses of Barry's past as he dances with Nora in the family kitchen, followed by a tragic scene of young Barry (Ian Loh) coming across his dying mother and his emotional father, Henry Allen (Ron Livingston).

In the next sequence, we hear Barry say in a voiceover, "Time has a pattern...that it can't help reliving. Different people, different worlds, drawn to each other like...magnets."

Barry comes across his younger self with longer hair, who is stunned and stammers, "This is my face. You stole my face."

The two Barrys arrive at stately Wayne Manor as we hear the voice of another Bruce Wayne, the one recently played by Ben Affleck, remark to Barry, "If you were to go into the past, you have no idea what the consequences could be."

We see fleeting images of older Barry being struck by the same bolt of lightning that gives younger Barry his powers, followed by a close-up of the Flash's ring that opens up and reveals his compacted uniform inside.

"Bruce," Barry replies, "I could fix things."

"You could also destroy everything," counters Bruce.

Sure enough, we get the return of Man of Steel's General Zod (Michael Shannon). Barry gasps in voiceover horror, "This can't be happening. I completely broke the universe."

Next, we see Zod emerge from a craft wearing his environmental protection suit. "We've been waiting for you," he remarks, extending a bladed weapon.

Still realizing how bad he screwed up, Barry says in another voiceover, "I created a world with no metahumans...and now there's no one to defend us."

We then see the bony, weakened form of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El (Sasha Calle), who appears to be a narrative substitute for the alternate timeline Superman featured in Flashpoint.

"Want some help?" asks Keaton's Bruce Wayne in a voiceover, as we see Barry power up the dormant Batcave, revealing the Batman (1989) versions of the Batmobile and Batwing. The younger Barry drops a mug as Keaton's Bruce Wayne steps into view, now wearing his Batman costume once again. "You...You are..."

"Yeah," replies Keaton's Batman with a dramatic pause. "I'm Batman."

As we hear the iconic notes from Danny Elfman's Batman theme, Batman swoops down into action and we see Affleck's Batman riding into action on a Batcycle.

"If I can't do what I did," Barry says to his younger self, "if I can't get back, there may not be a future."

We see various glimpses of a Dark Flash mirroring the Flash's movements, a lightning strike carrying electricity down from the Batwing hovering above, and Supergirl punching General Zod and unleashing her heat vision.

Next, Barry is shown lying on the ground, surrounded by military soldiers aiming their weapons at him. "What's the play?! Batman, what do we do?!" he shouts.

"We try not to die," replies Keaton's Batman as we see the emaciated Kara descend quickly from the sky and take out the soldiers.

In another scene, back at Wayne Manor, we see that Kara now looks healthier, presumably due to having access to sunlight once again. "It's not Clark," Barry remarks.

"My name is Kara," replies the Girl of Steel.

"I--I'm Barry," says the flustered older Barry to Kara. "Well, we're Barry," corrects the younger Barry.

Finally, as we see Kara in her Supergirl costume flying besides the Batwing, younger Barry holds his cell phone up to get a picture of her. Older Barry admonishes him, saying, "Barry, what are you doing?" "Our kids are gonna want to see this," replies Younger Barry as Supergirl streaks off into the distance ahead.

If you'd like to see the trailer for The Flash, you can check it out below thanks to the official DC Comics account on YouTube...

The Flash is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 16, 2023.

THE FLASH Casts Tony Curran as Despero for Five-Part Event "Armageddon"

Things are about to get desperate in Central City.

Deadline has word that the CW series The Flash has cast Tony Curran as classic DC Comics supervillain Despero for the show's upcoming Season 8.

According to the article, Despero is described as "a powerful and intelligent alien possessing incredible telepathic powers who left his homeworld—Kalanor—under mysterious circumstances. Now he’s facing a deadly mission on Earth, one whose outcome will decide the fate of humankind and put him on a collision course with Team Flash."

Yesterday, Deadline reported that Season 8 will begin with a special five-part event called "Armageddon", which will involve "a powerful alien threat arrives on Earth under mysterious circumstances and Barry (Grant Gustin), Iris (Candice Patton) and the rest of Team Flash are pushed to their limits in a desperate battle to save the world. But with time running out, and the fate of humanity at stake, Flash and his companions will also need to enlist the help of some old friends if the forces of good are to prevail."

"Armageddon" will feature numerous guest appearances from some of the CW Arrowverse's heroes and villains including Javicia Leslie as Batwoman, Brandon Routh as The Atom, Cress Williams as Black Lightning, Chyler Leigh as Sentinel, Kat McNamara as Mia Queen, and Osric Chau as Ryan Choi. Tom Cavanagh and Neal McDonough will return as enemies Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash and Damien Darhk, respectively.

Curran, 51, is a Scottish actor best known as Vincent van Gogh in the Doctor Who episodes "Vincent and the Doctor" and "The Pandorica Opens", Datak Tarr on the Syfy series Defiance, and Rodney Skinner (The Invisible Man) in the movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. His other films include Gladiator, Blade II, Underworld: Evolution, X-Men: First Class, and Thor: The Dark World, while his other TV appearances include episodes of Boardwalk Empire, Daredevil, Elementary, Sons of Anarchy, and Ray Donovan.

Created in 1960 by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky, Despero first appeared in Justice League of America (vol.1) #1 as a tyrant from the planet Kalanor who possessed a genius intellect and a third eye on his forehead capable of mind control, illusions, telekinesis, and telepathy. He soon enslaved the Justice League with his mental abilities. The Flash was stopped by escaping citizens of Kalanor and offered to help them against Despero. Despero forced the Flash into playing a chess-like game with the stakes being the fate of his friends, but used his hypnotic powers to trick the Flash into losing. Snapper Carr, who was watching in the shadows, was able to foil Despero's plot by freeing the League by pretending to be hypnotized. Despero was then imprisoned for his crimes.

After several additional encounters with the Justice League, Despero recreated himself in the Flames of Py'tar, a mystical source of power that granted him massive superhuman strength, durability, speed, reflexes and the ability to alter his biomass from human-sized to massive. Returning to Earth to exact revenge on the League with his newfound powers, Despero quickly defeated the League, destroying the Justice League Satellite, and captured Batman and Vixen. Batman learned the source of Despero's powers, escaped from his restraints, and freed Vixen. Vixen brought the League back for another battle in which Gypsy distracted Despero with an illusion of being incinerated by a sun. Though Despero knew it was an illusion, the distraction gave Vibe time to destroy the Flames of Py'tar, removing Despero's energy source and causing Despero to consume himself.

Despero eventually reformed, and targeted the former Justice League member Gypsy. After murdering Gypsy's parents, Despero was about to kill her when the Martian Manhunter intervened. The villain quickly defeated the Manhunter, although fellow Justice League member Guy Gardner arrived and hurled Despero away. Despero attacked the League at their headquarters, and killed the comatose Steel (on life support for injuries sustained during a battle against the androids of Professor Ivo). When Despero was about to murder the Blue Beetle, the Martian Manhunter bestowed upon him the gift of "Mayavanna", a sacred Martian rite that provides the subject with a reality in which they obtain their desires. Despero saw himself killing the entire League and destroying the world, and was immediately at peace.

Curran will be the first actor to portray Despero in live-action, although the character has appeared in various animated projects, including Justice League (voiced by Keith David), Batman: The Brave and the Bold (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson), Young Justice: Invasion, and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies.

The Flash returns to The CW for Season 8 with the "Armageddon" event on November 16, 2021.

THE FLASH Casts Jordan Fisher as Impulse

DC Comics' most impulsive speedster is heading to the small screen.

Variety is reporting that The CW series The Flash has cast Jordan Fisher as Bart Allen, better known to DC Comics fans as the superhero Impulse.  According to the article, Fisher will debut as Impulse in the series’ 150th episode, which is also the 17th episode of The Flash Season 7.

The character is described as "the future son of Barry aka the Flash (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton) and is said to be 'the fastest teenager on the planet'.  However, due to his penchant for 'wildly impulsive behavior', Barry and Iris will have their hands full trying to teach him patience — which will be a necessity if they want to succeed, not only as a family unit, but also in stopping the biggest threat to the Flash yet."

Fisher, 26, is an actor, singer, dancer, and musician who has previously appeared on the TV series Teen Wolf, Bones, The Secret Life of an American Teenager and Liv and Maddie.  He also voiced the character Sea Hawk on the animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and was the winner of Dancing with the Stars Season 25.

Created in 1994 by Mark Waid and Mike Weiringo, Impulse first appeared in The Flash (vol.2) #92 as Bart Allen, the grandson of Barry Allen, the second Flash, and son of Don Allen (one of the Tornado Twins) and Meloni Thawne (a descendant of Eobard Thawne).  Born with full super-speed and suffering from a hyper-accelerated metabolism, Bart Allen was aging at a faster rate than that of any other human being, causing him to appear to be the age of twelve when he was chronologically only two years old.  To prevent him from developing mental health problems, he was raised in a virtual reality machine which created a simulated world that kept pace with his own scale of time.  When it became clear that this method was not helping, his grandmother, Iris Allen, took him back in time to the present where the third Flash, Wally West, tricked Bart into a race around the world.  By forcing Bart into an extreme burst of speed, Wally managed to shock his hyper metabolism back to normal.

Because Bart had spent the majority of his childhood in a simulated world, he had no concept of danger and was prone to leaping before he looked.  The youth proved to be more trouble than Wally could handle, and he was given over to retired superhero speedster Max Mercury, who moved Bart to Manchester, Alabama.  As the teenaged superhero Impulse, Bart joined the Titans early in his career before going on to become one of the founding members of the superhero team Young Justice, alongside Robin (Tim Drake) and Superboy (Conner Kent).

Shortly after Bart joined the Teen Titans, he was shot in the knee by Deathstroke (who at the time was possessed by Jericho) and received a prosthetic replacement.  While recovering, Bart read every single book in the San Francisco Public Library and reinvented himself as the second Kid Flash.  Once healed, the artificial knee did not affect his ability to run at speeds approaching that of light, but reminding him that he needs to think first rather than to act impulsively.

Recently, in the era known as DC Rebirth, Bart returned to the main DC universe after Wally West and Barry Allen broke the Speed Force Barrier. Once again wearing the Impulse costume, he emerged from the Speed Force and raced through a city street triumphantly declaring that he was back.  Shortly afterwards, he reunited with his former Young Justice and Teen Titans teammates Robin and Wonder Girl (Cassandra Sandsmark).  Bart was the main driving force behind the revival of the Young Justice team, and after being transported to Gemworld and reunited with Superboy, the team officially re-formed.

Fisher will be the second actor to portray Impulse in live-action, after Kyle Gallner on the WB/CW series Smallville.  The character has also appeared on the animated series Young Justice and Young Justice: Outsiders, voiced by Jason Marsden.

The Flash airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.

THE FLASH Movie Casts Sasha Calle as Supergirl

The DC Extended Universe just got its own Supergirl.

Deadline has word that the upcoming DC Extended Universe film The Flash, starring Ezra Miller as The Flash/Barry Allen, has cast Latina actress Sasha Calle as Superman's cousin, Supergirl/Kara Zor-El.

According to the article, Calle was chosen from more than 425 actresses who auditioned.  The actresses weren’t informed what part they were reading for, until very late in the process. Calle also did a chemistry read with Miller.

The Flash director Andy Muschietti watched all the auditions and reportedly "was blown away by the actress’ toughness and vulnerability that she brought to the role."  "I saw more than four hundred auditions," remarked Muschietti.  "The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role."

Calle, 25, is best known as Lola Rosales on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, where she was nominated last year in the Outstanding Young Performer in a Drama series category at the Daytime Emmys.  She has also appeared in the short films The White Shoes and Final Stop.

Created in 1959 by Otto Binder, Al Plastino and Curt Swan, Supergirl first appeared in Action Comics (vol.1) #252 as Kara Zor-El, the daughter of Jor-El's brother Zor-El and cousin to Superman. She was the last survivor of Argo City, which had survived the destruction of the planet Krypton until meteorites of Green Kryptonite penetrated Argo City's protective barrier. Sent to Earth by Zor-El to be raised by her cousin, Kara acquired powers similar to Superman and adopted the secret identity of Linda Lee, a young girl at Midvale Orphanage.

In the New 52 continuity, Kara's ship lands as part of a meteor shower in Smallville, Kansas, but burrows through the Earth and emerges in Siberia. Kara has no memory of the destruction of Krypton and believes herself to be dreaming. The military tracks her arrival, and a group of American soldiers in mechanized suits immediately attack her. Her powers start emerging as the fight goes on and terrify the surprised Kara. Superman arrives after she defeats the soldiers and tries to convince Kara that he is her cousin, but Kara, still believing that only three days have passed since she last saw baby Kal, accuses him of being an imposter and attacks him. Eventually, Kara accepts that Krypton has been destroyed and that Superman is indeed her grown-up cousin.

Calle will be the fourth actress to portray the character in live action, after Melissa Benoist on the CBS/CW TV series SupergirlLaura Vandervoort on WB/CW series Smallvilleand Helen Slater in the 1984 film Supergirl that was a spinoff from the Superman films starring Christopher Reeve.  The character has also appeared a number of times in animation, including Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited (voiced by Nicholle Tom), and the Super Best Friends Forever DC Nation animated shorts (voiced by Nicole Sullivan).

The Flash is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 4, 2022.
