"You know what's dangerous about you? It's not that you make people take risks, it's that you make them want to impress you. You make it so they don't want to let you down. You have no idea how dangerous you make people to themselves when you're around."
-- Rory Williams, Doctor Who: "The Vampires of Venice"
Hello again, everyone! I'm back with a new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast! This time, I'm joined by special guest companion DJ Nik from The Fandom Zone Podcast to discuss "The Vampires of Venice", the sixth episode from Doctor Who Series Five in 2010, featuring Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, Arthur Darvill as Rory Williams, and Helen McCrory as Rosanna Calvierri!
In this episode, Nik and I discuss things like Nik's TARDIS translation matrix fail, Arthur Darvill's Rory Williams officially becoming a companion, where Venice is in relation to Milan, Europe opening up to American tourists again, Helen McCrory recently passing, the 2010 Dirk Gently series starring Stephen Mangan, why "The Vampires of Venice" was filmed in Croatia instead of Venice, the William Hartnell easter egg, writer Toby Whithouse originally wanting to write a story that became "The God Complex", "The Vampires of Venice" being inspired by Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London, some of the filmed sequences cut for time, original plans for a big monster to rise out of the water during Isabella's death scene, wondering why the Doctor left the "blokes" in the water as a potential threat, the awkward moment when the Doctor pops out of a cake at Rory's stag party to tell him that his fiancee Amy kissed him, the Doctor playing Cupid for Amy & Rory the night before their wedding, Rory being insecure about not being able to compete with the Doctor, Rory calling out the Doctor for letting his companions put themselves at risk to impress him, Amy settling for Rory even though she wanted the Doctor, the moment Amy truly falls in love with Rory, the Eleventh Doctor being very clueless about adult relationships, Guido wanting to give his daughter Isabella a better life, Guido sacrificing himself to take out the vampire girls with exploding gunpowder, Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula film bringing the Brides of Dracula back into public awareness, addressing various vampire tropes, the second tease of the Silence, the Doctor flirting with Rosanna, our favorite quotes of the episode, my Reverse the Polarity segment, new feedback from Holly Mac and Dave Proctor, Christine Peruski joining Xan Sprouse and me on Drunk Cinema, Semisonic's "Closing Time", and more!
