NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 231: "Enlightenment" Is Up!

"Spying, Doctor?"
"Well, I'd hardly call it spying.  We were welcomed as guests and given the freedom of the ship."
"And you think freedom extends to a door marked 'Danger'?"
-- Captain Wrack and the Fifth Doctor, Doctor Who: "Enlightenment"

Hello again, everyone!  I'm back with a new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast!  This time, I'm joined by special guest companion John Takacs to discuss "Enlightenment", the fifth serial from Doctor Who Season 20 in 1983, featuring Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Janet Fielding as Tegan Jovanka, Mark Strickson as Vislor Turlough, and the return of Valentine Dyall as the Black Guardian and Cyril Luckham as the White Guardian!

In this episode, John and I discuss things like John returning to Next Stop Everywhere after the Year of COVID Hell, my growing up in a family restaurant, John "enlightening" me on why he wanted to discuss this story, why it's better to watch the 2009 Special Edition version, Jesse Jackson needing to be here to discuss the story's pacing, the "Striker" visual pun gag in Airplane II: The Sequel, Lynda Baron singing "The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon" in "The Gunfighters", Valentine Dyall as Deep Thought in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy TV series, "Enlightenment" being the first Doctor Who story both written and directed by women, writer Barbara Clegg basing the Eternals on her annoying distant relatives, wondering would happen if Marriner pulled the memory of the shrunken corpse of Tegan's Aunt Vanessa for her nightstand photo instead, visual effects designer Mike Kelt asking if he could replace the dilapidated TARDIS console, Janet Fielding's breasts popping out from her low-cut ball gown during filming, the symbolism of Tegan and Turlough playing chess at the beginning of the story, Turlough jumping over to Team TARDIS from Team Black Guardian, Turlough cracking under the Black Guardian's pressure and attempting suicide by throwing himself overboard, Turlough choosing to refuse the Enlightenment diamond, Marinner being Tegan's uber-creepy stalker that she can't shake, wondering why the Doctor didn't just throw the focus gem overboard instead of trying to smash it, Turlough and Captain Wrack being the Black Guardian's pawns, the Doctor upgrading the celery stalk in his lapel, the Eternals being empty vessels needing mortals' thoughts, the crew of The Shadow welcoming the Doctor and Turlough as new crewmen, wanting to see the promised Third Encounter between the Doctor and the Black Guardian, the White Guardian's really bad pigeon-like headpiece, the quickly abandoned plan to visit Turlough's home planet in the next story, our favorite quotes of the episode, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, new feedback from Holly Mac and Dave Proctor, John training his daughter as a Whovian, DJ Nik filling in as Special Guest Companion next episode, and more!
