The revolution will indeed be televised. Specifically, on Cinemax.
Deadline is reporting that the Marvel/Icon comic book series Scarlet is in development at Cinemax. Scarlet co-creator Brian Michael Bendis announced the news today while speaking at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas. Although Bendis stated that the property is being developed for HBO, Deadline confirmed that the project is actually for HBO sibling Cinemax.
"I do a book called Scarlet, which is soon to be announced also in our universe of television," said Bendis. "Not announced yet, but HBO." Bendis added that the project is "at the earliest stage," but also stated "the team around it…will be announced as soon as all are on the same page."
Bendis continued, "Scarlet is a list of things you can’t get made. Here’s a female lead who’s killing cops because her world is broken." He added, "when it was sold, it was sold to people who were actively looking for that, so that put us in a good place. So stay tuned."
This will be the third Bendis comic series adapted for television, after the Marvel/Icon series Powers for Sony Playstation, and Jessica Jones, the Netflix series based on Bendis' Marvel MAX imprint series Alias.
Created in 2010 by Bendis and co-creator Alex Maleev, Scarlet is about a young woman named Scarlet Rue from Portland, Oregon, who rebels against a corrupt society following the death of her boyfriend at the hands of police and ends up starting a new American revolution in the process. The series often breaks the fourth wall, with Scarlet talking directly to the reader as she explains various details. To date, only ten issues of the comic have been published, with no additional issues currently scheduled.
