Jodie Whittaker & Showrunner Chris Chibnall Confirmed to Leave DOCTOR WHO in 2022

Well...here we go again...

The BBC News website has confirmed rumors that Jodie Whittaker will leave her role of the Thirteenth Doctor at the end of three Doctor Who specials in Autumn 2022, making her run five years since her debut replacing Peter Capaldi at the very end of "Twice Upon a Time" on Christmas Day, 2017. The 2022 Autumn Special will also be the last for series executive producer Chris Chibnall, with his replacement expected for the show's 60th anniversary in 2023.

According to the article, the upcoming Series 13 will only be six episodes instead of the expected eight, with the remaining two episodes now airing as specials, the first of which will be broadcast on New Year's Day 2022, with another later in spring 2022, followed by the Autumn Special.

"In 2017 I opened my glorious gift box of size 13 shoes," said Whittaker in a statement. "I could not have guessed the brilliant adventures, worlds and wonders I was to see in them. My heart is so full of love for this show, for the team who make it, for the fans who watch it and for what it has brought to my life.

"And I cannot thank Chris enough for entrusting me with his incredible stories. We knew that we wanted to ride this wave side by side, and pass on the baton together. So here we are, weeks away from wrapping on the best job I have ever had. I don't think I'll ever be able to express what this role has given me. I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I've learnt forever.

"I know change can be scary and none of us know what's out there. That's why we keep looking. Travel hopefully. The universe will surprise you. Constantly."

In his statement, Chibnall referenced a pact made with Whittaker, saying, "Jodie and I made a 'three series and out' pact with each other at the start of this once-in-a-lifetime blast. So now our shift is done, and we're handing back the TARDIS keys. Jodie's magnificent, iconic Doctor has exceeded all our high expectations. She's been the gold standard leading actor, shouldering the responsibility of being the first female Doctor with style, strength, warmth, generosity and humor."

He also added, "She captured the public imagination and continues to inspire adoration around the world, as well as from everyone on the production.  I can't imagine working with a more inspiring Doctor - so I'm not going to!"

New GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE Trailer Teases the Return of Ray Stantz & Janine Melnitz

Are you ready to believe them?

Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the upcoming sequel to the films Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II, directed by Jason Reitman. Set thirty years after the events of the second film, a single mother and her two children move to a small town in Oklahoma, where they discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and their grandfather's secret legacy.

The two-minute, 30-second trailer opens on the town of Summerville, Oklahoma, with Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon), the daughter of original Ghostbuster Egon Spengler (the late Harold Ramis), moving to the small town with her children, Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace).

We move to the local burger joint, Spinners, where Callie is talking with Mr. Grooberson (Paul Rudd) about her children. "You're a great mom," Grooberson remarks.

"I don't know. I'm fine with Trevor but with Phoebe...She really keeps me on the outside."

"That's normal," replies Grooberson. "She's an awkward, nerdy kid."

"Maybe a new home can be an opportunity to start fresh. I just wish she'd get into some trouble."

"There's still time."

We see Phoebe solving a puzzle embedded in wooden flooring and finding one of the Ghost Traps from the original two films.

Next, we cut to Trevor, who is hanging with some high school kids at an old drilling shaft site. "What are you doing here in Summerville, anyway?" asks one teenaged girl named Lucky (Celeste O'Connor).

"We're completely broke," explains Trevor, "and our grandfather left us this creepy old farmhouse in the middle of nowhere."

Cutting to the inside of the farmhouse, we hear the voice of Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) tell Callie, "Your father wasn't much of a homemaker. He could hardly keep the power on."

"You're saying he left us nothing?" asks Callie.

"Well, I wouldn't say nothing..."

We see Trevor finding the original Ecto-1 1959 Cadillac after pulling up the dusty tarp covering it, followed by Phoebe seeing Trevor working on the engine. "You went with the station wagon?" she asks.

"It's the only one that had an engine," he replies as a separate scene shows him joyriding through a field.

Suddenly, storm clouds and small earthquakes rattling the town follow, with Trevor asking, "What is happening here?"

In a separate scene, Grooberson tells Phoebe, "Somehow, a town with no fault lines is shaking on a daily basis."

"Maybe it's the apocalypse," replies Phoebe as we see a ghost suddenly emerge from the shaft site, startling Trevor and the teenagers.

In another scene, Phoebe remarks, "Egon came out here for a reason" and we see her watching the original Ghostbusters commercial, which is now on YouTube. As the commercial plays, we see someone finding a P.K.E. meter, while Grooberson encounters several tiny Stay-Puft marshmallow men at the local Walmart.

Things start to get worse, with a giant ominous stormcloud hovering above, followed by dark forces emerging from a large pit. The main road downtown begins to crack, spectral energy begins to swirl through the sky, and an undead miner gets coffee at Spinners. "This whole city," remarks Grooberson, "it's like The Walking Dead."

As a Terror Dog chases Grooberson out of the Walmart, we then see Trevor and Phoebe wearing Ghostbusters jumpsuits and Phoebe using a particle thrower on a ghost named Muncher while riding outside Ecto-1 through the streets of Summerville.

In the final scene, we see Grooberson watching the commercial on YouTube with Phoebe, which cuts to a familiar occult bookstore at night. The phone rings and we hear the voice of Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) quickly answer, "We're closed."

If you'd like to check out the new trailer, you can below it below thanks to the official Ghostbusters account on YouTube...

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is currently expected to arrive in theaters on November 11, 2021.

DOCTOR WHO Comic-Con Panel Reveals Series 13 Teaser Trailer & Season-Long Storyline

Any questions? No? See you soon...

As the San Diego Comic-Con entered the final day of its second virtual convention, Comic-Con@Home 2021, the featured Doctor Who panel featured the release of the first teaser trailer for the show's upcoming Series 13 and revealed a number of interesting items about the new season.

Moderated by Salon.com’s Melanie McFarland, the panel featured showrunner Chris Chibnall, Jodie Whittaker (The Thirteenth Doctor), Mandip Gill (Yasmine "Yaz" Khan), and new Doctor Who cast member John Bishop, whose full character name was revealed to be Dan Lewis. In addition, the panel featured the guest appearance by Jacob Anderson, best known as Grey Worm on Game of Thrones, who will be playing a new character called Vinder.

And for Whovians wanting details about the upcoming Series 13, the big news is that the entire season of 8 episodes will be a season-long storyline with cliffhangers at the end of each episode. This will be something new to fans of the modern Doctor Who era, but presumably, this will be similar to classic Doctor Who Seasons 16 ("The Key to Time") and Season 23 ("The Trial of a Time Lord").

"Before we started making it," said Chibnall, "there were times when we thought we were going to be unable to do the show under Covid conditions this year…there were two ways you could go. You could go ‘let’s do lots of tiny little episodes in one room, with no monsters,’ or we could throw down the gauntlet and do the biggest story we’ve ever done. We’re going to go to all kinds of different places, we’re going to have all kinds of characters and monsters, and it’s all going to be part of a bigger whole. It's definitely the most ambitious thing we've done since we've been on the series."

Also, familiar "old monsters" will be appearing throughout Series 13, although no specifics were provided.

If you want to check out the Series 13, teaser trailer, you can view it below thanks to the official BBC America account on YouTube...

And if you want to watch the Comic-Con@Home panel, you can view it below thanks to the official Comic-Con International account...

Doctor Who will return to BBC America for Series 13 later in 2021.

BATGIRL Casts Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon

Warner Bros. has found their new Batgirl.

According to Deadline, the upcoming HBO Max movie Batgirl, based on the DC Comics superhero, has cast Leslie Grace as lead character Batgirl/Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon.

The article states that Grace beat out other final contenders Isabella Merced, Zoey Deutch and Haley Lu Richardson with her audition. The DC Extended Universe film is rumored to feature the Batman villain Firefly.

Batgirl will be released on HBO Max, one of the first DC characters to debut exclusively on the streaming service in a movie.  Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will direct from a script by Christina Hodson. Kristin Burr will serve as producer.

Grace, 26, is an actress, singer and songwriter of Dominican heritage who played Nina Rosario in Jon M. Chu's film adaptation of In the Heights, based on Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony Award-winning musical. She has also released two studio albums, Pasión (2009) and Leslie Grace (2013).

Created in 1967 by William Dozier, Julius Schwartz and Carmine Infantino, Barbara Gordon first appeared as Batgirl in Detective Comics (vol.1) #359, and later that same year on the Batman television series episode "Enter Batgirl, Exit Penguin", as the daughter of Gotham City's Police Commissioner James Gordon.  In her debut story in the comics, while driving to a costume ball dressed as a female version of Batman, Barbara Gordon intervened in a kidnapping attempt on Bruce Wayne by the super villain Killer Moth, which gained Batman's attention and led to a crime-fighting career.  Although Batman insisted she give up crime-fighting because of her gender, Batgirl disregarded his objections.

In the controversial 1988 graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke, writer Alan Moore had Batman's arch-enemy The Joker shoot and paralyze Barbara in an attempt to drive her father insane, thereby proving to Batman that anyone can be morally compromised.  One year later, writers John Ostrander and Kim Yale gave Barbara Gordon new life in Suicide Squad (vol.1) #23 as Oracle, a mysterious computer expert who assisted and supplied information to various DC Comics heroes in their fight against crime.  The character's popularity led to the creation of the series Birds of Prey in 1996, where writer Chuck Dixon partnered Oracle with Black Canary and a rotating cast of female DC superheroes.

In 2011, DC Comics rebooted their continuity in The New 52, effectively making the character younger in a modern timeline where she became active again as Batgirl.  In the new continuity, the events of The Killing Joke took place three years before current events, but it was established she was paraplegic during that time.  Barbara Gordon regained her mobility after undergoing experimental surgery at a South African clinic.  In recent months, Barbara has a new life as a PhD student in the hip Gotham borough of Burnside, in between adventures as Batgirl and with the Birds of Prey.

Grace will be the fifth actress to portray the character in live-action, after Yvonne Craig on the Batman TV series, Dina Meyer on Birds of Prey, Jeté Laurence on Gotham, and Savannah Welch on Titans.
