THE FANDOM ZONE 199: "The Flash (1990) Pilot" Is Up!

"Look, if you have anywhere near the power I suspect you do, the government will classify you as a security risk.  They'll try to take your cells apart, try to make a hundred of you."
"I think you've been reading too many comic books."
-- Dr. Christina "Tina" McGee and Barry Allen, The Flash (1990): "Pilot"

Hello again, everyone!  It's time for another new episode of The Fandom Zone Podcast!  This time, my co-hosts Jesse Jackson & DJ Nik and I discuss the pilot episode of the CBS series The Flash from 1990, introducing John Wesley Shipp as The Flash/Barry Allen, Amanda Pays as Dr. Tina McGee, Alex Desert as Julio Mendez, Paula Marshall as Iris West, and Michael Nader as Nicholas Pike!

In this episode, Jesse, Nik and I talk about things like Jesse returning to The Fandom Zone, Jesse indulging Nik's and my Flash obsession, John Wesley Shipp as Dawson's dad on Dawson's Creek, Amanda Pays as Theora Jones on Max Headroom, Officer Tony Bellows moving up from beat cop to Mayor of Central City, Paula Marshall in Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, Priscilla Pointer in Blue Velvet, comic writers and artists getting name-checked in the Daredevil movie, me being the Flash guy in the Titans amateur press association group TitanTalk, Nik and his sister finding common ground watching The Flash, Flash composer Shirley Walker, my reaction to The Flash airing on television, The Flash being heavily influenced by the 1989 Batman movie, the extremely expensive pilot and episodes not making CBS enough money to justify a Season 2 renewal, wondering why CBS aired The Flash at 8:30 p.m. EST instead of 9:00 p.m., original Flash Jay Garrick being reworked as Barry's brother, Henry Allen preferring Jay to Barry because Jay was a "real" cop, showrunners Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo adding Wally West's character traits to Barry to make him more modern and relatable, CBS suits thinking of The Flash as a cop show, the 1990 special effects holding up surprisingly well, Iris West being depicted as a flaky artist, Barry's quickly-forgotten fainting spells, wondering what this version of Barry and Iris would talk about after sex, Joyce Hyser's Megan Lockhart being a much better love interest for Barry, Jay being killed off-screen, our favorite quotes of the episode, our big 200th episode, and more!
