Hayley Atwell Returning for Planned AGENT CARTER TV Series
While Marvel Comics fans continue to hope for a possible Captain/Ms. Marvel movie (Katee Sackhoff, anyone?), an unexpected heroine may end up with her own TV series.
Deadline reported last night that Marvel is developing a possible television series for ABC around the character Peggy Carter from Captain America: The First Avenger, played by actress Hayley Atwell. The series idea was inspired by the Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter short film, which is included as an extra with the Iron Man 3 Blu-Ray release arriving in stores this Tuesday. Set after Carter's appearance in The First Avenger, the Agent Carter short explores Peggy Carter's life as a new secret agent for the Strategic Scientific Reserve in search of the mysterious Zodiac organization.
With the project in the very early stages, little is known about the potential series. However, the Agent Carter short ends with a phone conversation tasking Carter with heading up S.H.I.E.L.D. with Iron Man's father Howard Stark as future S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Timothy "Dum Dum" Dugan looks on. So presumably, the Agent Carter TV series would follow up on the early days of S.H.I.E.L.D., and The Playlist claims they have sources saying that Atwell will indeed return with shooting beginning in 2014.
If Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. does as well for ABC as planned, it's only natural that they would want a companion series and Agent Carter seems like a solid choice. Besides, ABC did pretty well for five years with another female-led espionage series by the name of Alias...
