"Without this machine, the Doctor's stuck. He can't leave Earth."
"You were about to open it?"
"Yes."
"I think you should. There might be a policeman locked inside."
-- Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart and Dr. Liz Shaw, Doctor Who: "Spearhead from Space"
Hello again, everyone! My partner in time Jesse Jackson and I are back for another new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast! This time, we're joined by special guest Xan Sprouse as we regenerate our discussion of "Spearhead from Space", the first serial from Doctor Who Season 7 in 1970, introducing Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, Caroline John as Liz Shaw, and the first appearance of the Autons!
In this episode, Jesse, Xan and I discuss things like Jesse expressing disappointment with his Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys, luring Xan back with Autons, Jesse listening to our original discussion of "Spearhead from Space" in Episode 014, the BBC stating that Doctor Who will continue with or without Disney, what Xan enjoys about this serial, the Brigadier needing to stop calling Liz "Miss", Pertwee's stunt with the wheelchair, "Spearhead" being the only Classic Who story to be made on 16 mm film, the serial being based on a story that Robert Holmes wrote for the 1965 film Invasion, Caroline John being startled by an extra posing as a mannequin, producer Derrick Sherwin wanting to film a scene of Autons smashing through a shop window, the Doctor using the alias "Dr. John Smith", Liz being the victim of 1970s male writing, the Brigadier keeping the key to the TARDIS from the Doctor, Jon Pertwee rocking the opera cape, Jon's son Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth on Gotham, "Spearhead" having a similar plot to The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension, Liz being the Dana Scully of Doctor Who, Dr. Henderson having a really bad day, Ransome trying to bring the creepy doll factory into the 20th century, the 1996 TV movie paying tribute to the "two hearts" x-ray scene, wondering why no one blinked twice about Auton Scobie's greasy face, Baltar from Battlestar Galactica being a collaborator, the Dalek upgrades in "Dalek", Xan wondering why there are only three Auton stories in 62 years of Doctor Who, our favorite quotes from the episode, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, new listener feedback from Sandi from Oregon, Holly Mac and Dave Proctor, Bruce Springsteen having enough of Jesse's money, and more!
