One of Batman's biggest enemies wants to be remembered in Gotham City.
The Max streaming service has released the first teaser trailer for The Penguin, the upcoming crime drama TV series with Colin Farrell reprising his role as DC Comics supervillain The Penguin/Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot from Matt Reeves' 2022 film The Batman.
In addition to Farrell, The Penguin stars Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, Michael Kelly as Johnny Vitti, and Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar.
The 90-second teaser opens at night in Gotham with the Penguin sitting and talking to someone off-camera. "When I was a kid," he begins, "there was a gangster, a real old-school type -- Rex Calabrese. He was a big deal. He helped people. If he saw you on the street, he'd call out to you..."
As we see a car pull up, the Penguin retrieves a sledgehammer from the trunk. "When I'm fourteen or somethin'," he continues, "he has a heart attack and dies...still holdin' a cigar. In my neighborhood, they throw a parade in his honor. A friggin' parade..."
We then see the Penguin limping up the stairs, his right leg in a metal brace. He continues, "...and it wasn't fancy, but it was the gesture. The show of love of what he meant."
The Penguin then uses a lighter to start a fire, then pulls out a switchblade and stabs someone. We also see him pull someone holding a gun through the driver-side window of his car, followed by a glimpse of Sofia Falcone, the Penguin smoking a cigar, and the Penguin sitting across Salvatore Maroni inside prison. More fleeting glimpses follow, including the Penguin being threatened with a knife, various gunfire, and Sofia screaming.
"Can you imagine," says the Penguin as the trailer ends, "to be remembered like that?"
