THE FANDOM ZONE 260: "Wednesday Ever After" Is Up!

"Thank God it's Thursday. You wouldn't even believe all the stuff we tried."
"Once we even tried connecting the battery to the particle accelerator. After fifty-eight time loops, you kinda throw caution to the wind."
-- Iris West-Allen and Barry Allen, The Flash -- "Wednesday Ever After"

Hello again, everyone! It's time for another new episode of The Fandom Zone Podcast!  This time, DJ Nik and I return to The Fandom Zone to discuss "Wednesday Ever After", the first episode of The Flash Season Nine, featuring Grant Gustin as The Flash/Barry Allen, Candice Patton as Iris West-Allen, and the introduction of Richard Harmon as Captain Boomerang II/Owen Mercer

In this episode, DJ Nik and I talk about things like neither of us being fans of time-loop episodes, Nik being surprised by the reveal of the Red Death at the end of the episode, finally getting a lot of characterization between Barry and Iris as a couple, being surprised that we finally got a decent episode of The Flash again, some comics background on the second Captain Boomerang and the Red Death, wondering if we'll ever get an animated version of Dark Nights: Metal, Barry being so afraid of losing Iris yet again that he created a notebook of what's coming up for both of them in their future, Barry being able to phase a nuclear explosion so it doesn't harm anyone with radiation or a shockwave, Iris relying on the time-loop to save herself a hangover, my being tired of seeing Barry Allen being written as Peter Parker instead of Barry Allen, Barry naturally turning to Joe for advice, wondering if we'll ever see Joe and Cecile's daughter again, my preferring Frost as Killer Frost, wanting to see Chester become his superpowered alias Chunk at least for one episode, Cecile being Barry Allen's lawyer in the 1980s comics, Captain Boomerang not being Big Bad material, realizing that Red Death won't be Bruce Wayne, our favorite quotes of the episode, the plot synopsis for "Hear No Evil", why we decided to talk The Flash Season 9 for the next several episodes, and more!

GHOSTWOOD 124: "Murder at Teal's Pond" Is Up!

"Both Laura and Hazel dreamed of escape and reinvention; in the end, fate determined otherwise."
-- David Bushman & Mark T. Givens, Murder at Teal's Pond: Hazel Drew and the Mystery That Inspired Twin Peaks

It is happening again...My amazing co-host Xan Sprouse and I are back with a new episode of Ghostwood: The Twin Peaks Podcast!  This time, we discuss Murder at Teal's Pond: Hazel Drew and the Mystery That Inspired Twin Peaks, the 2022 true crime book by David Bushman and Mark T. Givens that investigates the unsolved 1908 murder of Hazel Drew that inspired the Laura Palmer mystery on Twin Peaks!

LET'S ROCK

In this episode, Xan and I discuss things like venturing into true crime podcast territory, the book's foreword by Mark Frost, the writers playing up the Twin Peaks references, the offbeat cast of characters in the book resembling Twin Peaks characters, Mark Frost thinking Hazel Drew's name was Hazel Grey, a special appearance by Xan's cat Willie, Hazel's body being found by two kids who were part of a camping group, the initial autopsy of Hazel's body, the 1906 murder of Grace Brown, Rensselaer County District Attorney James O'Brien and his deputy Duncan C. Kaye heading up the investigation, Hazel's parents being clueless about what was going on in their daughter's life, Hazel's horrible uncle William Taylor not bothering to tell his sister that Hazel was believed to be the murdered body, the dichotomy of Hazel being poor but somehow having fancy clothes and being able to afford going on all kinds of trips, sensationalist reporter William Clemens glossing himself "The Sherlock Holmes of America", the team effort of Republicans trying to look like they're investigating Hazel's murder but not coming up with someone to charge, the unanswered question of why Hazel suddenly took a train back to Troy the day she was murdered, Hazel's aunt Minnie telling reporters that Hazel was hypnotized, Bushman and Givens' theory of who murdered Hazel Drew, Mark Marshall's theory of how the murderers met Hazel at Teal's Pond and why they killed her, Xan and I making plans to watch the short films of David Lynch together, and more!

NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 283: "The Aztecs" Is Up!

"Oh, don't you see? If I could start the destruction of everything that's evil here...then everything that's good would survive when Cortez lands."

In this episode, Jesse, Nik and I discuss things like Nik taking up residence in the TARDIS, "The Aztecs" being a purely historical story apart from the TARDIS, Jesse finding more affection for the First Doctor, Nik doing a project on the Aztecs in high school, being sad that John Lucarotti's other Doctor Who stories aren't available on video, historical Doctor Who stories made in the Modern Era always having a science-fiction element, Jesse visiting Mexico, our plea to get former special guest companion John Takacs back on the show, Lucarotti becoming fascinated by the Aztecs' tradition of human sacrifice, real-life Aztec women going around topless, Tlotoxl being one of the few Doctor Who villains who never receives any sort of comeuppance, Carole Ann Ford taking a holiday during the filming of Episodes 2 and 3, the Doctor getting himself accidentally engaged to Cameca, the Doctor trying to keep Barbara from forcing her values on the Aztecs, Cameca being seen as a respected elder, the First Doctor having a problem with later Doctors changing history, the Doctor going back to take Cameca's seal so he can remember her, the First Doctor calling out Barbara for wanting to change history, the Doctor consoling Barbara after her plan failed, the Fourth Doctor being tempted to change history in "Genesis of the Daleks", Ixta viewing Ian as a serious rival, wishing Nik's Cousin Janet a happy birthday, wondering where Ian learned his wrestling moves, Ixta being nice to Ian one moment and then wanting to murder him the next, Ixta losing to Ian's thumb, Ian as Indiana Jones inside the tomb, Tlotoxl viewing Barbara as a false goddess, Susan having a Women's Lib moment by refusing to be married off to the Perfect Victim, Tlotoxl being similar to Loki as a trickster and schemer, Autloc giving up his title and possessions to go walk the Earth like Kane in Kung Fu, our favorite quotes of the story, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, new feedback from Dave Proctor, Sandi from Oregon and Holly Mac, Nik returning to close out our trilogy of Hartnell stories with "The Sensorites", and more!

First Trailer for THE FLASH Teases Michael Keaton's Return as Batman

Batman returns...this June.

During Sunday's broadcast of Super Bowl LVII, which had the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35, Warner Bros. Pictures released the first trailer for The Flash, the upcoming film adaptation of the DC Comics superhero directed by Andy Muschietti, played once again by Ezra Miller.

Loosely based on DC Comics' event storyline Flashpoint, worlds collide in The Flash when Barry Allen uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no superheroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian…albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?

The 2 minute, 50 second trailer opens with the Flash, sporting a new costume, arriving at his childhood home at night. We hear a voiceover from none other than Michael Keaton as Batman/Bruce Wayne, making his first appearance back in the role since 1992's Batman Returns, say, "Tell me something. You can go anywhere. Another timeline. Another universe. So, why do you want to stay and fight to save this one?"

Barry replies, "Because this is the one where my mom lives," referencing the death of his mother, Nora Allen (Maribel Verdú), as depicted in Flashpoint. "I'm not gonna lose her again." We see glimpses of Barry's past as he dances with Nora in the family kitchen, followed by a tragic scene of young Barry (Ian Loh) coming across his dying mother and his emotional father, Henry Allen (Ron Livingston).

In the next sequence, we hear Barry say in a voiceover, "Time has a pattern...that it can't help reliving. Different people, different worlds, drawn to each other like...magnets."

Barry comes across his younger self with longer hair, who is stunned and stammers, "This is my face. You stole my face."

The two Barrys arrive at stately Wayne Manor as we hear the voice of another Bruce Wayne, the one recently played by Ben Affleck, remark to Barry, "If you were to go into the past, you have no idea what the consequences could be."

We see fleeting images of older Barry being struck by the same bolt of lightning that gives younger Barry his powers, followed by a close-up of the Flash's ring that opens up and reveals his compacted uniform inside.

"Bruce," Barry replies, "I could fix things."

"You could also destroy everything," counters Bruce.

Sure enough, we get the return of Man of Steel's General Zod (Michael Shannon). Barry gasps in voiceover horror, "This can't be happening. I completely broke the universe."

Next, we see Zod emerge from a craft wearing his environmental protection suit. "We've been waiting for you," he remarks, extending a bladed weapon.

Still realizing how bad he screwed up, Barry says in another voiceover, "I created a world with no metahumans...and now there's no one to defend us."

We then see the bony, weakened form of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El (Sasha Calle), who appears to be a narrative substitute for the alternate timeline Superman featured in Flashpoint.

"Want some help?" asks Keaton's Bruce Wayne in a voiceover, as we see Barry power up the dormant Batcave, revealing the Batman (1989) versions of the Batmobile and Batwing. The younger Barry drops a mug as Keaton's Bruce Wayne steps into view, now wearing his Batman costume once again. "You...You are..."

"Yeah," replies Keaton's Batman with a dramatic pause. "I'm Batman."

As we hear the iconic notes from Danny Elfman's Batman theme, Batman swoops down into action and we see Affleck's Batman riding into action on a Batcycle.

"If I can't do what I did," Barry says to his younger self, "if I can't get back, there may not be a future."

We see various glimpses of a Dark Flash mirroring the Flash's movements, a lightning strike carrying electricity down from the Batwing hovering above, and Supergirl punching General Zod and unleashing her heat vision.

Next, Barry is shown lying on the ground, surrounded by military soldiers aiming their weapons at him. "What's the play?! Batman, what do we do?!" he shouts.

"We try not to die," replies Keaton's Batman as we see the emaciated Kara descend quickly from the sky and take out the soldiers.

In another scene, back at Wayne Manor, we see that Kara now looks healthier, presumably due to having access to sunlight once again. "It's not Clark," Barry remarks.

"My name is Kara," replies the Girl of Steel.

"I--I'm Barry," says the flustered older Barry to Kara. "Well, we're Barry," corrects the younger Barry.

Finally, as we see Kara in her Supergirl costume flying besides the Batwing, younger Barry holds his cell phone up to get a picture of her. Older Barry admonishes him, saying, "Barry, what are you doing?" "Our kids are gonna want to see this," replies Younger Barry as Supergirl streaks off into the distance ahead.

The Flash is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 16, 2023.
