NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 352: "Planet of the Ood" Is Up!

"It's a brain, a hind brain. The Ood are born with a secondary brain. Like the amygdala in humans, it processes memory and emotions. You get rid of that, you wouldn't be Donna anymore, you'd be...well, like an Ood, a processed Ood."
"So, the company... cuts off their brains."
"And they stitch on the translator."
"Like a lobotomy. I spent all that time looking for you, Doctor, because I thought it would be so wonderful out here. I wanna go home."
-- The Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble, Doctor Who: "Planet of the Ood"

Hello again, everyone! My partner in time Jesse Jackson and I are back for another new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast! This time, we discuss "Planet of the Ood", the third episode from Doctor Who Series Four in 2008, featuring David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, Tim McInnerny as Klineman Halpen, and Adrian Rawlins as Dr. Ryder!

In this episode, Jesse and I discuss things like recording a day early so Jesse can go to a Texas Rangers game, both of us splurging on Superman (2025) merchandise, celebrating our eleventh anniversary, Jesse feeling like he was watching "Planet of the Ood" again for the first time, Classic Who director Graeme Harper directing New Who, Tim McInnerny as Lord Percy on Black Adder, Adrian Rawlins as Harry Potter's dad, Andor being Star Wars for grown-ups, the three times the Tenth Doctor encountered "fake snow", original plans for Ida Scott from "The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit" to appear in "Planet of the Ood", Halpen's transformation into an Ood originally being far more graphic, original plans for Halpen appearing at a Friend of the Ood demonstration, Donna making her first trip into outer space, the Tenth Doctor and Donna having to insist they're not a couple, the Doctor regretting that he didn't think about the Ood being enslaved, the Ood's hind brains being replaced with translation spheres, Solana Mercurio deciding to rat on the Doctor and Donna to the security guards, karma coming for Solana Mercurio and Commander Kess, the Watchmen TV series, Halpen being tricked into using "hair tonic" by Ood Sigma, the sequence where Halpen rips off his own face to reveal he's transformed into an Ood, the Ood's song being recycled later as "Song of Freedom" in "Journey's End", Ood Sigma's ominous prophecy that the Tenth Doctor's song will be ending soon, our favorite quotes from the episode, my Reverse the Polarity segment, new listener feedback from Holly Mac, my discussion of Seven on Gold Standard: The Oscars Podcast, regenerating our discussion of "Spearhead from Space", and more!

"And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told...I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then...then I'm...I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And...and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler, and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire..."

THE FANDOM ZONE 322: "The Ruler of Hell" Is Up!

"I didn't ask them to come here. They chose Hell. That is what Hell is, a place for dead mortals to torture themselves. And like all masochists, they give the orders. 'Burn me, freeze me, eat me, hurt me,' and what do I get out of it?"
"Their souls."
"Dream, what need have I for souls? You can't own someone else's soul. They belong to themselves. They just hate to have to face up to it. They blame me for their little failings. 'The devil made me do it.' I have never made one of them do anything. Never. They live their own tiny lives, and then they die. And they come here. And they expect me to fulfill their desires of pain and retribution, but I'm done with all that. Hell is closed."

"Everybody I know has been swallowed up by thin air, because a creature from another world caught my eye across a galactic ballroom, and now I’m inside a—what did you call it? A “star ship”?"
"This is the part where I usually have some explaining to do, but that’s actually not a bad summary. It’s called a TARDIS – the ship. It stands for Time And Relative Dimension In Space. Is now a good time to mention time travel?"
"No, Doctor, it is not!"

NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 348: "Snakedance" Is Up!

"Dreams are important, Nyssa. Never underestimate them."
-- The Fifth Doctor to Nyssa, Doctor Who: "Snakedance"

Hello again, everyone! My partner in time Jesse Jackson and I are back for another new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast! This time, we discuss "Snakedance", the second serial from Doctor Who Season 20 in 1983, featuring Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Janet Fielding as Tegan Jovanka, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa, and the return of the Mara!

In this episode, Jesse and I discuss things like Jesse watching the Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere trailer, my thanks to Jesse for his birthday message, getting back to basics of just Jesse and me, "Snakedance" being a sequel to "Kinda", Jesse finally getting around to watching Stranger Things, Jim Stafford being dollar-store Ray Stevens, Martin Clunes having a very familiar face, Brian Miller being the husband of Elisabeth Sladen, writer Christopher Bailey getting the idea from snake handling within isolated Christian sects in Appalachia, Bailey using more Buddhist terms in a script, designer Jan Spoczynski being disappointed with the sets, the Megaphone Man referencing the T.S. Eliot poem "The Waste Land", Episode 4 being considerably overrun and having to be restructured, Tegan giving the Doctor coordinates to the planet Manussa, finally getting to see another room in the TARDIS beside the Console Room, the Fifth Doctor being oblivious to Nyssa's ugly new outfit, the Doctor and Nyssa's concern for Tegan, Jesse not realizing that Doctor Octopus counted his legs as part of his eight appendages, the Manussans creating the Mara out of their own fear and rage, the Doctor and Dojjen sharing telepathic contact instead of simply talking, Tanha failing as a mother and letting Lon turn into a spoiled brat, Chela as a potential Almost Companion, Janet Fielding getting another chance to play a villain, the CGI upgrade to the Mara in the special edition blu-ray set, the possibility that Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski could become the new Doctor Who showrunner, our favorite quotes of the episode, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, new listener feedback from Dave Proctor, Holly Mac and Sandi from Oregon, the Eighth Doctor audio companion Audacity Montague, and more!

DRUNK CINEMA 080: "Friday the 13th (1980)" Is Up!

"The boy. Is he dead, too?"
"Who?"
"The boy -- Jason."
"Jason?"
"In the lake. The one... the one who attacked me. The one who pulled me underneath the water."
"Ma'am, we didn't find any boy."
"But... then he's still there."
-- Alice Hardy and Sgt. Tierney, Friday the 13th (1980)

Hello again, movie fans!  My wonderful co-host Xan Sprouse and I are back with a new episode of Drunk Cinema! This time, we  watch Friday the 13ththe 1980 slasher film directed by Sean S. Cunningham, featuring Betsy Palmer as Pamela Voorhees, Adrienne King as Alice Hardy, Kevin Bacon as Jack Burrell, and Ari Lehman as Jason Voorhees!

This time, Xan and I discuss things like Xan getting over a big case of Stockholm Syndrome, my original plan for us to watch John Wick instead, watching Friday the 13th on Friday the 13th, Betsy Palmer agreeing to play Pamela Vorhees so she could buy a car, both of us preferring Friday the 13th Part II to the original, Kevin Bacon being the only person in this movie who had a decent movie career, Walt Gorney as Crazy Ralph, Xan's ranking of the first six Friday the 13th movies, the Friday the 13th franchise vs. the Halloween franchise, the depiction of 1958 as 1978, why we should never talk about the movie Soul Man, the current popularity of axe throwing, my hating the ending to The Blair Witch Project, action canoes with paddle-turning action, the absolutely useless life preserver, Xan's love of guys in 3/4-sleeve baseball shirts, the very unconvincing thunderstorm, Marcie's decent Katherine Hepburn impression, the point of Strip Monopoly, Flowers in the Attic being a terrible book, not wanting to live in a world without Mel Brooks, Pamela's issues with camp counselors having sex, Pamela and Alice mud wrestling, Xan's problem with the Friday the 13th franchise, my rereading The X-Files: Ground Zero by Kevin J. Anderson, new Drunk Mail from Christine Peruski, Aaron Case and Dave Proctor, my having problems with Superman III, and more!
