Hulu Crashes and Burns the GHOST RIDER TV Series

Ghost Rider just went off the track and crashed in a big ball of flame.

Deadline has revealed that Hulu has decided to not more forward with their live-action series Ghost Rider, based on the Robbie Reyes version of the supernatural Marvel Comics character.

According to the article, "Hulu and the Ghost Rider team had reached a creative impasse which could not be resolved, leading to the streamer’s decision not to move forward with the series."  It remains unclear whether the series will be shopped elsewhere.

Previously announced back in May, Marvel’s Ghost Rider centers on Robbie Reyes, the quintessential antihero, who lives on the Texas/Mexico border, consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon.  When he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles controlling the power he wields.

Marvel’s Ghost Rider was going to star Gabriel Luna, reprising his role as Ghost Rider/Robbie Reyes on ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. from 2016-17.  The series was executive produced by Ingrid Escajeda, serving as showrunner, Paul Zbyszewski and Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb.

Created in 2014 by Felipe Smith and Tradd Moore, the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider first appeared All-New Ghost Rider #1 as a high-school student working as a mechanic at an auto body shop, who lives with his developmentally disabled brother Gabe and seeks to get away from the dangerous, gang-riddled streets of East Los Angeles.  To that end, he enters a street race, hoping to use the prize money to move themselves away. He is gunned down by mercenaries trying to retrieve pills that caused the transformation of Calvin Zabo into the supervillain Mr. Hyde, which had been left in the trunk of the 1969 Dodge Charger he "borrowed" from the auto body shop for the race.  He is revived as Ghost Rider, a demonic being with a flaming, helmet-like head.  He drives off in the car, which also blazes with flame.

Marvel's Helstrom, based on the Marvel character Daimon Hellstrom, was also announced in May, but remains on track for its premiere in 2020 on Hulu.

Jeffrey Wright in Talks for THE BATMAN's Commissioner Gordon

Gotham City's violent delights may have violent ends.

The Hollywood Reporter has word that actor Jeffrey Wright is in negotiations for the role of Commissioner James Gordon in Matt Reeves' upcoming Warner Bros. film The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson.

The Batman is said to be a noir-driven Batman movie, rumored to be based on the popular 13-issue limited series Batman: The Long Halloween, written by Jeph Loeb and drawn by Tim Sale.

Wright, 53, is best known as Bernard Lowe on the HBO series Westworld, and as Felix Leiter in the James Bond films Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and No Time to Die.  His other films include The Hunger Games movies, The Goldfinch, W., The Invasion, Lady in the Water, Ali, and Shaft (2000).  His other television appearances include episodes of Boardwalk Empire, The Venture Bros., House, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, and Homicide: Life on the Street.

Created in 1939 by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Commissioner Gordon first appeared in Detective Comics (vol.1) #27, which also featured the first appearance of Batman. Gordon was introduced as the Police Commissioner of Gotham City, who shares Batman's deep commitment to ridding the city of crime.  Although often skeptical of Batman's vigilante methods, Gordon believes that Gotham needs him.

In the 1987 story "Batman: Year One," writer Frank Miller and artist David Mazzuccheli revealed that Gordon transferred back to Gotham City after spending more than fifteen years in Chicago.  A man of integrity, Gordon discovered that Batman was his only ally against the mob-controlled administration.  He was a special forces veteran capable in hand-to-hand combat and retaliated against an intimidation attempt by corrupt fellow officers with equal violence.  Gordon ended up having an extramarital affair with a fellow detective, Sarah Essen, but he broke off their affair after being blackmailed by the corrupt Police Commissioner, Gillian B. Loeb.  Mob boss Carmine Falcone sent his nephew, Johnny Viti, to abduct Gordon's family.  Batman saved them, however, and helped Gordon expose Loeb's corruption.  After Loeb resigned, Gordon was promoted to Captain.

As the years passed, Gordon quickly rose to the rank of Commissioner after he and Batman weeded out corruption within the department.  After the death of his brother and sister-in-law, he adopted his niece, Barbara.  Gordon divorced his wife Barbara, who returned to Chicago with their son James, while he retained custody of Barbara, who eventually became Batgirl.  Gordon soon deduced his daughter was Batgirl, but would not confront her about it again, until years later.

If cast, Wright will be the sixth actor to portray James Gordon in live action, after Neil Hamilton on the '60s television series Batman, Pat Hingle in the Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher films, Gary Oldman in the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight film trilogy, Ben McKenzie on the Fox TV series Gotham, and J.K. Simmons in the film Justice League.

The Batman is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 25, 2021.

Hailee Steinfeld in Talks for HAWKEYE's Kate Bishop

Kate Bishop.  She's pretty much an Avenger.

Variety is reporting that Hailee Steinfeld has been offered the role of Kate Bishop in the upcoming Disney+ TV series Hawkeye, based on the Marvel Comics character.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe series will star Jeremy Renner, reprising his role of Hawkeye/Clint Barton from the Avengers films, and is expected to be six to eight episodes, debuting sometime in Fall 2021.  Hawkeye is reportedly set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, hinting that Clint Barton may pass on the mantle of Hawkeye to Kate Bishop.

Steinfeld, 22, is an actress and singer best known as Mattie Ross in the 2010 film version of True Grit, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and also as Charlie Watson in the Transformers spinoff movie Bumblebee.  She recently voiced the Gwen Stacy Spider-Woman for the animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and has appeared in the films Pitch Perfect 2 and 3, Ender's Game, Barely Lethal, Ten Thousand Saints, and 3 Days to Kill.  

Created in 2005 by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung, Kate Bishop first appeared in Young Avengers (vol.1) #1 as the youngest daughter of a rich Manhattan family.  Although her father Derek was an emotionally distant publishing magnate, Kate admired him, and tried to gain his attention and approval during her summer breaks from boarding school.  Her mother Eleanor was estranged from her father, and frequently absent on vacations until she died while on trip in Boulder, Colorado when Kate was still young.

When she was still little, Kate secretly witnessed her father beating up another person late at night in his study.  She quickly became disillusioned with Derek, and decided to further investigate his activities.  Following him to a meeting with the supervillain El Matador, Kate was caught after Derek had left the location.  El Matador held her for ransom, but Kate managed to attempt an escape.  When one of Matador's men was about to catch her, an arrow flew past him, distracting him and saving Kate.  The Avengers had arrived to the scene, after the archer Hawkeye had kept an eye on El Matador for some time, and they defeated the villains.  Kate was impressed by the Avengers, but especially Hawkeye, for being a regular human with no powers but only skill. With the recent disillusion from her father, Kate made Hawkeye her new role model.

At some point prior to her sister Susan's wedding, Kate was sexually assaulted while walking in Central Park.  The event initially left Kate traumatized and even more isolated. However, the ordeal eventually motivated her to learn several forms of combat fighting and self-defense.  She quickly became proficient in swordplay, archery, and martial arts.

Kate first encountered the Young Avengers when they attempted to save her and two hundred other guests at her sister's wedding in St. Patrick's Cathedral.  Unfortunately, the Young Avengers were only successful in starting a fire and became hostages themselves.  It was Kate who saved them, using one of Patriot's throwing stars.  The Young Avengers were able, however, to escape the scene before the police arrived.  After the attack, at the hospital, Kate was approached by Cassie Lang, daughter of the Avengers' Ant-Man. Together, the girls tracked down the Young Avengers to the ruins of the Avengers Mansion, where the girls confronted the team and invited themselves on as members.

Along with the rest of her team, Kate sided with Captain America and the Secret Avengers against the Superhuman Registration Act, which led to the Superhero Civil War.  Afterward, Kate unwittingly berated a resurrected Clint Barton for donning the Captain America uniform and bearing the Captain America's Shield.  She stated that she took on the codename "Hawkeye" to honor the original Hawkeye, and not to mimic him nor disgrace his memory.  It was her words that convinced Clint to condemn Iron Man for his behavior, and go his own path.

After the Young Avengers disbanded, Kate was recruited as a partner of Clint, in his street-level crime-fighting in Brooklyn.  The two maintained a close friendship, even after Kate decided to go solo and set up her own detective agency, Hawkeye Investigations, in Los Angeles.
