"Anybody interested in grabbing a couple of burgers and hittin' the cemetery?"
-- Royal Tenenbaum, The Royal Tenenbaums
Hello again, movie fans! My wonderful co-host Xan Sprouse and I are back with a new episode of Drunk Cinema! This time, we pay tribute to the late Gene Hackman as we watch The Royal Tenenbaums, the 2001 comedy-drama directed by Wes Anderson, featuring Gene Hackman as Royal Tenebaum, Ben Stiller as Chas Tenenbaum, Gwyneth Paltrow as Margot Tenenbaum, and Luke Wilson as Richie Tenenbaum!
This time, Xan and I discuss things like Gene Hackman's death changing our plans to watch Strange Brew, the strange circumstances surrounding the death of both Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa, the look of Wes Anderson films, Danny Glover being too old for this shit, Ben Stiller as Mr. Furious in Mystery Men, needing to watch Idiocracy, the score by DEVO's Mark Mothersbaugh, Gene Hackman being a better actor than Spencer Tracy, the hand seen with the BB lodged in it belonging to Luke and Owen Wilson's brother Andrew Wilson, wondering how Margot kept her smoking habit secret for decades, Pagoda being a rat, Royal's emotional gaslighting, Xan loving the Tenenbaums being a dysfunctional family, the great slapstick of Henry walking into a hole, what an unforced error in tennis means, the Tenenbaums' amazing board game closet, Royal Tenenbaum being a combination of Lex Luthor and Archie Bunker, Richie's suicide attempt, wondering why Richie wasn't under a psychiatric evaluation hold that kept him from leaving the hospital, Royal being a good person to ask for something weird and gross, wondering why Dudley constantly hangs out with Raleigh St. Clair, the two BB gun salute, Royal's gravestone epitaph being a metaphor, new Drunk Mail from Dave Proctor and Christine Peruski, our second attempt to watch Strange Brew for our next episode, and more!
