"The Cybermen...They blew up! I blew them up with love!"
"No, that's impossible. And also grossly sentimental and over-simplistic. You destroyed them because of the deeply-ingrained hereditary human trait to protect one's own genes. Which in turn triggered a... a...um…Yeah. Love. You blew them up with love."

THE SANDMAN Reveals Additional Cast for the Upcoming Netflix TV Series

It continues...

Netflix has revealed twelve more actors playing characters for the upcoming Netflix TV series adaptation of the beloved DC Comics/Vertigo series The Sandman, co-created and executive produced by Neil Gaiman.  Seven other actors, including Tom Sturridge as Dream/Morpheus, were announced back in January.

The Sandman TV series is described by Netflix as "A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he's made during his vast existence."

In a press release posted on Netflix's website, Gaiman expressed his thoughts on the casting for each character...

Kirby Howell-Baptiste as DEATH – Dream's wiser, nicer, and much more sensible sister. Significantly harder to cast than you might imagine (well, than I imagined, anyway). Hundreds of talented women from all around the planet auditioned, and they were brilliant, and none of them were right. Someone who could speak the truth to Dream, on the one hand, but also be the person you'd want to meet when your life was done on the other. And then we saw Kirby Howell-Baptiste's (she/her) audition and we knew we had our Death.

Mason Alexander Park as DESIRE – Dream's sibling and everything you want, whatever you want and whoever you are. Desire is also trouble for Dream. Families are complicated. We had barely started looking when Mason Alexander Park (they/them) reached out on Twitter, and threw their hat into the ring. We were thrilled when they got the part.

Donna Preston as DESPAIR – Desire's twin, Dream's sister. She is the moment when all hope is gone, the bleakest of the Endless. Donna Preston (she/her) will be playing her, and her performance is chilling and sad. You feel her pain.

Jenna Coleman as JOHANNA CONSTANTINE – Eighteenth Century occult adventuress, John Constantine’s great-great-great grandmother. This Sandman character became so popular that she even had her own spin-off series. I created her to fill the role that John Constantine does in the past. When we broke down the first season, given that we knew that we would be encountering Johanna in the past, we wondered what would happen if we met a version of her in the present as well. We tried it and the script was sparkier, feistier, and in some ways even more fun. So having written her, we just had to cast her. Jenna Coleman (she/her) gave us the Johanna of our dreams – tough, brilliant, tricky, haunted and probably doomed.

Niamh Walsh & Joely Richardson as ETHEL CRIPPS – Roderick Burgess's love, John Dee's mother, is a small but vital role in the comics, but she became more important as we told our story. In the 1920s and 30s, she is played by Niamh Walsh (she/her): a betrayed and determined young woman seeking to survive. In the present day, now a woman of a hundred identities and a thousand lies, she's played by the brilliant Joely Richardson (she/her).

David Thewlis as JOHN DEE – Ethel's son is dangerous. He was driven mad, long ago. Now he's out and on a quest for Truth that may destroy the world. We needed an actor who could break your heart and keep your sympathy while taking you into the darkest places. We were lucky that David Thewlis (he/him) took the part.

Kyo Ra as ROSE WALKER – A young woman on a desperate search for her missing brother, who finds a family she didn't know that she had, and a connection to Dream that neither of them can escape. We needed someone young who could make you care as she ventures into some very dangerous places. Boyd Holbrook's Corinthian is waiting for her, after all. Kyo Ra (she/her) achieves that as Rose.

Razane Jammal as LYTA HALL – Rose’s friend, a young widow mourning her husband Hector. Rose doesn't know that Hector has started showing up in Lyta's dreams, though. Or that strange things are happening. Razane Jammal (she/her) is Lyta, and she's terrific.

Sandra James Young as UNITY KINKAID - Heiress, Rose's mysterious benefactor. She has spent a century asleep. Now she's awake, having missed out on her life. She's played by Sandra James Young (she/her).

Stephen Fry as GILBERT – Rose Walker's debonair protector. A dab hand with a paradox and a sword cane. Stephen Fry (he/him) is a National Treasure, and we forget sometimes that he's also a remarkable actor. Seeing him in costume and make up on the dailies made me blink: it was as if the comic had come to life.

Patton Oswalt as MATTHEW THE RAVEN  – Dream’s trusted emissary. A raven. I expected our animals to be CGI, and was both taken aback and thrilled when the dailies started coming in, and there was Dream talking to... well, a raven. But ravens don't really talk. The question was, could we find an actor who could make you care about a dead person who was now a bird in the Dreaming – one who isn't certain what's going on, or whether any of this is a good idea? And could we find a voice performer who was also the kind of Sandman fan who used to stand in line to get his Sandman comics signed? The answer was, we could if we asked Patton Oswalt (he/him). And Patton was the first person we asked, and the first person we cast, the day before we pitched The Sandman to Netflix.

The Sandman is currently expected to be released on Netflix sometime in 2021.

The CW Picks Up DC Comics' NAOMI to Series

The biggest new mystery in the DC Universe is officially coming to The CW.

Deadline has word that the pilot for Naomi, based on the DC Comics character Naomi McDuffie, has been picked up to series by The CW for the 2021-22 season.

According to the show’s official description, Naomi follows a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the Multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.

Written and executive produced by Ava DuVernay and Arrow writer and co-executive producer Jill Blankenship, Naomi stars Kaci Walfall in the lead role along with Alexander Wraith, Cranston Johnson, Camila Moreno, Mary-Charles Jones, Barry Watson, Mouzam Makkar, Daniel Puig, Will Meyers and Aidan Gemme. Naomi is produced by DuVernay’s Array Filmworks in association with Warner Bros Television, with Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes also set as EPs. Amanda Marsalis directed and co-executive produced the pilot episode.

Created in 2019 by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell, Naomi McDuffie first appeared in Naomi #1 as a teenager born on Earth in an alternate universe. Naomi's universe was very similar to the Prime Universe, but with a few distinguishing details.  After years of human environmental abuse, the Earth's ozone layer collapsed.  In the wake of the ozone layer's destruction, undiscovered radiation leaked onto the Earth's surface which had previously been kept at bay.

The radiation didn't harm anyone on planet Earth, but twenty-nine random people across the planet were given access to godlike powers.  Naturally, some of the twenty-nine sought to rule the world with these newfound powers, while others sought to stop them.  After one month of civil war between these two factions, fourteen of the twenty-nine were killed, while an additional seven more of the twenty-nine left the planet in disgust, resulting in only eight remaining.  Eventually, these eight were able to call a truce before the Earth was entirely destroyed.

None of the twenty-nine had been able to procreate, until Naomi's mother miraculously gave birth to her.  Zumbado, the most vile of the twenty-nine, sought to end Naomi's life to prove his superiority among the twenty-nine.  However, Naomi's parents, with the help of a woman called Akira, made preparations for Naomi's escape.  Eventually, her parents' allies brought Naomi to the Prime Universe, where she was discovered and adopted by Greg McDuffie and his wife Jen McDuffie in the small town of Port Oswego, Oregon.  Naomi grew up not knowing anything about her childhood, believing that she was just an ordinary girl.

Naomi’s curiosity about her childhood ultimately forced Greg to confess that he's an alien from the planet Rann who fought alongside Adam Strange and Green Lantern in the Rann/Thanagar War and came to Earth on a mission to track down Dee (the town’s mechanic who happened to be a Thanagarian terrorist soldier).  While on Earth, he fell in love with Jen and took her as his wife.  Naomi also learned she can transform into a superpowered form, giving her golden armor along with several metahuman abilities, including energy projection, flight, increased strength, and increased durability.

Soon after, a portal opened with a large man telling Naomi that he had used her newly-discovered powers to lock onto her location and that Akira had sent him to bring her back to their world.  Eager to see her birth world, Naomi followed the man through the portal.  Naomi was shocked to discover that her birth world had been almost completely ravaged.  The man revealed to Naomi that he was Zumbado, and that her parents had died a long time ago.  Naomi attacked him, determined to claim vengeance for her parents' deaths.  Although she was incredibly powerful, Naomi was no match for Zumbado's greater experience, and she was quickly overwhelmed.  Fortunately, Lady Akira came to Naomi's aid and opened a portal for her escape back to Earth.  Although reluctant to leave Akira in the hands of Zumbado, Naomi eventually headed through the portal back home.  Zumbado attempted to follow her, but Naomi was able to use her powers to send him back through the portal, which subsequently closed.

After these events, Naomi flew to Metropolis looking for help with her powers and soon encountered Superman and Batman.  She soon joined the teen superhero group Young Justice for a time and has recently become a member of the Justice League.

First Trailer for Marvel's ETERNALS Teases When Gods Walked the Earth

It's beautiful, isn't it?

Marvel Studios has released the first trailer for Eternals, the upcoming film directed by Chloé Zhao based on the Marvel Comics team of superpowered immortals created by the legendary Jack Kirby.

The two-minute teaser trailer opens with Skeeter Davis' 1962 classic "The End of the World", taking us to a coastline far in Earth's past.  A group of primitives watch in amazement as a triangular spaceship carrying the Eternals comes into view above them.

"It's beautiful," remarks Sersi (Gemma Chan) to Ikaris (Richard Madden) as she looks down at the coastline below, "isn't it?"

We see fleeting glimpses of Thena (Angelina Jolie), Ajak (Salma Hayek), and Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) before the Eternals set foot on Earth to guide humanity and hear a voiceover from Ajak.

"We have watched...and guided," begins Ajak. "We have helped them progress, and seen them... accomplish wonders. Throughout the years, we have never interfered...until now."

Glimpses of Sersi in the present day, Sprite (Lia McHugh), Druig (Barry Keoghan), Gilgamesh (Don Lee), and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) follow, before we see the Eternals hovering in the air, Thena preparing to fight with a stylish energy sword, and Ikaris and Sersi's eternal love for one another.

Next, we see glimpses of Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) in some sort of Bollywood-style dance sequence, Sprite singing karaoke aboard a private jet, and Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) with Sersi as ominous storm clouds gather overhead.  The Eternals then gather on the coastline for a group shot in their costumes as the Eternals logo appears.

In a final brief scene, the Eternals, in present-day clothes, are eating around a table inside a primitive home. Ikaris thanks Gilgamesh for the food and then Sprite asks the question, "So, now that Captain Rogers are both gone, who do you think's gonna lead the Avengers?"

Ikaris mulls the question over for a moment then replies, "I could lead them." Everyone else, meanwhile, looks around at each other then starts laughing.

If you'd like to check out the teaser trailer for Eternals, you can view it below thanks to the official Marvel Entertainment account on YouTube...

Eternals is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 5, 2021.
