As the San Diego Comic-Con entered the final day of its second virtual convention, Comic-Con@Home 2021, the featured Doctor Who panel featured the release of the first teaser trailer for the show's upcoming Series 13 and revealed a number of interesting items about the new season.
Moderated by Salon.com’s Melanie McFarland, the panel featured showrunner Chris Chibnall, Jodie Whittaker (The Thirteenth Doctor), Mandip Gill (Yasmine "Yaz" Khan), and new Doctor Who cast member John Bishop, whose full character name was revealed to be Dan Lewis. In addition, the panel featured the guest appearance by Jacob Anderson, best known as Grey Worm on Game of Thrones, who will be playing a new character called Vinder.
And for Whovians wanting details about the upcoming Series 13, the big news is that the entire season of 8 episodes will be a season-long storyline with cliffhangers at the end of each episode. This will be something new to fans of the modern Doctor Who era, but presumably, this will be similar to classic Doctor Who Seasons 16 ("The Key to Time") and Season 23 ("The Trial of a Time Lord").
"Before we started making it," said Chibnall, "there were times when we thought we were going to be unable to do the show under Covid conditions this year…there were two ways you could go. You could go ‘let’s do lots of tiny little episodes in one room, with no monsters,’ or we could throw down the gauntlet and do the biggest story we’ve ever done. We’re going to go to all kinds of different places, we’re going to have all kinds of characters and monsters, and it’s all going to be part of a bigger whole. It's definitely the most ambitious thing we've done since we've been on the series."
Also, familiar "old monsters" will be appearing throughout Series 13, although no specifics were provided.
