Returning from the farthest reaches of time and space, my good friend and co-host Jesse Jackson and I are finally back with a new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast!  We're reviewing the second audio adventure from Big Finish Productions' first War Doctor set Only the Monstrous, "The Thousand Worlds" starring John Hurt!

This time, Jesse and I discuss things like Jesse feeling tricked by the cliffhanger, the War Doctor being snarky, the Doctor's antagonistic relationship with the Time Lords, John Hurt taking the role of the War Doctor, Carolyn Seymour as the older Rejoice and her previous work on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager, gender-specific names with Time Lords, Seratrix and the Daleks, Jesse eggs-stir-minating some eggs in his kitchen while we record (I'm not kidding about this), Jesse dropping out of a Daredevil podcast, The Fandom Zone Podcast gaining on Next Stop Everywhere, Jesse's road trip with his son Chris to see Bruce Springsteen, my Reverse the Polarity segment, the recent casting announcement for the Doctor Who spinoff Class, and more!

CLOAK AND DAGGER TV Series Greenlit by Freeform

And now Freeform is getting into the comic book TV show game.

Variety has revealed that Freeform (formerly known as ABC Family) has greenlit a TV adaptation of Marvel Comics' superhero duo Cloak and Dagger.  Marvel Studios and ABC Signature Studios will co-produce the series, which is targeted toward young adults.

Receiving a straight-to-series order, Cloak and Dagger is described in the article as a "live-action interracial romance" that follows "two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love — Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging."

Created in 1982 by Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan, Cloak and Dagger first appeared in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #64 as Tyrone "Ty" Johnson (Cloak) and Tandy Bowen (Dagger), two runaways who met in New York City.  Tyrone was a 17-year-old boy from Boston, Massachusetts with a debilitating stutter, and ran away to New York City when his speech impediment prevented him from stopping his friend from being shot by police, who mistakenly believed he had just robbed a store.  Tandy was a 16-year-old girl from a privileged upbringing in Shaker Heights, Ohio, who ran away because her multi-millionaire supermodel mother was too busy with her career and social life to spend time with her daughter.

When they met, Tyrone considered stealing Tandy's purse, but before he could, a thief stole the purse and Tyrone retrieved it for her.  Afterwards, they had dinner and became fast friends.  When naïve Tandy accepted an offer of shelter from some strange men, Tyrone went along to protect her.  The two teens were soon forcibly delivered to criminal chemist Simon Marshall, who was developing a new synthetic heroin for Silvermane and the Maggia, testing it on runaway teens with fatal results.  Johnson and Bowen somehow survived injections of the drug, and they fled.  During their escape, the drug turned them into superpowered beings, which was later retconned to reveal they are actually mutants and the drug had simply awakened their latent abilities.

Tyrone found himself engulfed in darkness and seized by a strange hunger, which eased in the presence of Tandy glowing with a brilliant light.  Trying to hide his newly shadowy appearance in a makeshift cloak, Tyrone began absorbing Marshall's thugs into his darkness while Tandy struck them down with daggers of light.  The two teens dubbed themselves "Cloak & Dagger" and declared war on drug crime in combating drug-dealers and helping runaway children.  Cloak and Dagger became vigilantes, who hunted and killed Simon Marshall and his drug-dealing henchmen responsible for activating their powers. They first encountered Spider-Man during these events, then murdered Silvermane in revenge, and battled his reanimated cyborg form.  Soon after, they teamed with Spider-Man to thwart the Punisher's murder attempt on the Kingpin.

After later tests by Dr. Nemesis confirmed they are not mutants, Cloak and Dagger recently returned with the other's powers, under the corruptive influence of Mister Negative using Shade patches, which dosed them with a drug that stimulates the effects of Negative's touch to remain loyal to him.  They broke Mister Negative out of the prison ship where he was being kept and restored him to lead an assault on Parker Industries in Japan.  Although Peter Parker was able to escape being corrupted by Negative thanks to Negative's prior corruption of Spider-Man, Cloak and Dagger managed to help Negative escape when Peter tracked them to his Hong Kong headquarters by secretly placing a Spider-Tracer on Cloak. Using this Spider-Tracer, Peter was able to inject Cloak with a cure for Shade that he later used to cure Dagger, apparently restoring their original powers.  Although Mister Negative escaped, Cloak and Dagger decided to remain in Hong Kong to guard it from any future attacks.

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY Debuts Teaser Trailer

Many Bothans died to bring us this teaser trailer.

The teaser trailer for the upcoming Gareth Edwards film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been released, giving Star Wars fans their first good look at the first movie set outside the main saga.

Set close to the events in the original 1977 film by creator George Lucas, the one-minute, 40-second trailer begins with a sad piano version of Luke Skywalker's theme as we see Felicity Jones' character, Jyn Erso, being brought in to the Rebel Base on Yavin 4.

Someone runs down Jyn's criminal record, which includes "forgery of Imperial documents, possession of stolen property, aggravated assault, resisting arrest..."

"On your own from the age of fifteen," begins a young Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly), the former Republic senator, now co-founder and leader of the Rebel Alliance, "reckless, aggressive, and undisciplined."

"This is a rebellion, isn't it?" replies Jyn as we see Jyn fighting and blasting a group of Imperial Stormtroopers.  "I rebel."

"We have a mission for you," continues Mon Mothma as we see a key piece to the first Death Star being installed.  "A major weapons test is imminent.  We need to know what it is, and how to destroy it."

As an alarm klaxon sounds, we see Jyn and Diego Luna's character readying for battle along with a squadron of X-Wing pilots.  We then see Ben Mendelsohn's character, who looks like an Imperial Admiral.  Forest Whitaker's character asks Jyn "What will you do when they catch you?  What will you do is they break you?"

We then see Donnie Yen's character, using a staff to take out a Stormtrooper.

"If you continue to fight," continues Whitaker's character as we see several AT-AT Imperial Walkers firing a bunch of Rebels, followed by a shot of Jyn in a black Imperial uniform, "what will you become?"

THE BOYS TV Series in Development at Cinemax

I don't suppose Simon Pegg is available to play Wee Hughie?

Deadline has word that Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Neal Moritz are bringing another Garth Ennis comic book series, The Boys, to cable television.  Cinemax has put the drama series in development from the Preacher team of Rogen and Goldberg’s Point Grey, Moritz’s Original Film and Sony Television.

According to the article, the TV adaptation is being developed by Rogen, Goldberg and Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, and written by Kripke.  Rogen and Goldberg, who helmed the Preacher pilot, are set to direct.  Serving as executive producers are Original Film’s Moritz, Pavun Shetty and Ori Marmur; Point Grey’s Rogen, Goldberg and James Weaver; Kripke; as well as Ken Levin and Kickstart’s Jason Netter (Preacher).  Ennis and co-creator Darick Robertson will serve as co-executive producers.

The series is set "in a time where most of the superheroes are corrupted by their celebrity status and often engage in reckless behavior, compromising the safety of the world.  It centers on a CIA squad, known informally as 'The Boys,' whose job is to keep watch on the proliferation of superheroes and, if necessary, eliminate some of them."

The Boys, which ran for 72 issues and three 6-issue limited series from 2006-2012, was published initially by Wildstorm (#1-6) and then by Dynamite Entertainment.  Filled with extreme violence, sexual situations and dark humor, the series began with an Englishman named Billy Butcher who learns of a presidential directive charging the CIA with monitoring all superheroes.  He uses the directive to get the backing required to reform "The Boys," a black ops team designed to police the superhero community.  Butcher brings together Mother's Milk, the Frenchman, and the Female (of the Species), but the Boys' fifth member, Mallory, refuses to return as his grandkids were murdered due to his involvement with the group.  Requiring five in the team, Butcher recruits a Scottish conspiracy theorist named "Wee Hughie" Campbell, whose girlfriend was accidentally killed by A-Train, a reckless member of major superhero team The Seven.

The Boys will be the second comic book series for Cinemax, following Outcast by The Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman.

DOCTOR WHO Spinoff CLASS Announces Cast

So now we know.  Class is the British version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

BBC Three has announced the principal cast for Class, the upcoming spinoff of Doctor Who that will air later this year on BBC America.  Shown above, new actors Vivian Oparah, Greg Austin, Sophie Hopkins, and Fady Elsayed, will be joined by Katherine Kelly, who has the role of "a teacher and powerful new presence at Coal Hill School."  

The 8-part series is set in contemporary London, where incredible dangers are breaking through the walls of time and space, and with darkness coming, London is unprotected. Here's a description of the series from the BBC...

Like all sixth formers, these four Coal Hill School students have hidden secrets and desires. They are facing their own worst fears, navigating a life of friends, parents, school work, sex, sorrow - and possibly the end of existence.

Coal Hill School has been a part of the Doctor Who Universe since the very beginning, but that has come at a price. All the time-travelling over the years has caused the very walls of space and time to become thin. There’s something pressing in on the other side, something waiting for its chance to kill everyone and everything, to bring us all into Shadow.

Fear is coming, tragedy is coming, war is coming. Prepare yourselves, Class is coming.

"We searched far and wide for this amazing cast, fantastic actors who understand what we’re aiming for with this show," said Young Adult writer and Class creator Patrick Ness. Steven Moffat, executive producer of Class and Doctor Who, added, "There’s nothing more exciting than meeting stars that nobody’s heard of yet.  We had the read through of the first few episodes last week, and there was a whole row of them.  Coal Hill School has been part of Doctor Who since the very first shoot in 1963, but this new show is anything but history. Class is dark and sexy and right now.  I’ve always wondered if there could be a British Buffy -- It’s taken the brilliant Patrick Ness to figure out how to make it happen."

Class is from writer Patrick Ness, director Ed Bazalgette (Poldark, Doctor Who), producer Derek Ritchie, and executive producers Patrick Ness, Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin. The BBC Cymru Wales production, co-produced with BBC America and BBC Worldwide, starts filming today and will premiere on BBC Three this year.

IRON FIST Casts Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing

From a Sand Snake to a Daughter of the Dragon.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the upcoming Netflix series Iron Fist has cast Jessica Henwick as Marvel Comics martial artist Colleen Wing.

According to the article, Colleen Wing will be the series' female lead and is described as "A martial arts expert running her own dojo, Colleen will serve as an invaluable ally to Iron Fist, aka Danny Rand (Finn Jones), as he returns to his life in New York."

"I’m very excited to have Jessica as our Colleen Wing," said Executive Producer and Showrunner, Scott Buck.  "She’s shown us that she can bring both a sense of quiet strength as well as an engaging vulnerability to the character."

"Jessica brings both a youthful vitality mixed with a strong sense of authority crucial to the character," said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb.  "And as anyone who’s seen her in Game of Thrones can attest, she can throw down with the best of them, making her the perfect Colleen Wing."

Henwick, 23, is an English actress best known as Nymeria Sand on the HBO series Game of Thrones, which also featured Finn Jones as Ser Loras Tyrell.  She recently appeared in the film Star Wars: The Force Awakens as X-Wing pilot Jessika Pava, and has appeared in the television series Fortitude, Silk, The Thick of It, and Spirit Warriors.

Created in 1974 by Doug Moench and Larry Hama, Colleen Wing first appeared in Marvel Premiere #19 as the daughter of Professor Lee Wing, a teacher of Asian history and culture at New York's Columbia University, and an unnamed Japanese woman, whose ancestors were samurai and daimyo.  Colleen grew up in the northern regions of Japan, raised by her grandfather Kanji because Colleen's mother was killed very early in her childhood.  Her grandfather taught her the ways of the samurai, in which she later became very skilled.

Professor Wing learned from a monk who had been to the other-dimensional realm of K'un-L'un that a young warrior, Iron Fist, would come from that land to seek vengeance on his father's killer, who was now based in New York.  Professor Wing calculated when Iron Fist would come to New York and sent Colleen to meet him.  Professor Wing and Colleen befriended Iron Fist, and Colleen has acted as his ally in many of his adventures.

Years later, Colleen went back to New York City to visit her father. She was caught in a gun battle by the local Manhattan police and some thugs.  Luckily, she was rescued by officer Misty Knight, who eventually became her best friend.  Later, Knight's right arm was severely injured by a bomb explosion and was amputated.  Colleen encouraged Knight to rise above her depression and return to an active role in life.  Knight's right arm was replaced with a bionic steel arm.  As a detective, Colleen Wing and Knight formed a partnership as private investigators and called their firm Nightwing Restorations, Ltd.  Due to Wing's samurai-style training and both partners' expertise in Asian martial arts, they were called "The Daughters of the Dragon."

Colleen teamed with Misty in opposing agents of the criminal Emil Vachon in Hong Kong, until she was captured by Vachon, who turned her into a heroin addict.  She was rescued by Misty Knight, overcame her addiction, and took vengeance on Vachon.  Colleen soon fought Davos, the second Steel Serpent, and met Spider-Man.  She later aided the X-Men and Sunfire in battling Moses Magnum in Japan.  Accompanying the X-Men to Canada, she made romantic overtures towards Cyclops, whose girlfriend Jean Grey was presumed dead at the time.  She was held prisoner by Arcade soon after, until the X-Men freed her.

Following Daredevil's takeover of Hell's Kitchen during the Shadowland storyline, Colleen, Misty, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Shang-Chi confronted him in attempt to stop him without violence.  After a commotion happens elsewhere in his castle, he attacked the group, believing they were responsible.  Days after the fight, Colleen was contacted by Daredevil, offering information about her mother.  Upon visiting him again, he revealed to her that her mother actually led a resurrected Hand group of swordswomen called "The Nail." Colleen's mother and the Nail were eventually assassinated by one of The Hand's enemies. Daredevil asked her to lead a new incarnation of the Nail consisting of Black Lotus, Cherry Blossom, Makro, and Yuki.  Colleen later betrayed the Nail and had to defend herself against them.

Iron Fist is expected to air on Netflix sometime in 2017.
