NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 311: "The Silurians" Is Up!

"Urgent message from the Brigadier."
"Oh, he's away, isn't he, investigating some scientists?"
"Yes, well, he wants us to join him -- 'Miss Shaw and the Doctor will report themselves forthwith to Wenley Moor. Attend a briefing meeting at precisely…'"
"My dear Miss Shaw, I never report myself anywhere, particularly not forthwith."
-- Liz Shaw and the Third Doctor, Doctor Who: "The Silurians"

Hello again, everyone! My partner in time Jesse Jackson and I are back with a new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast! This timewe're joined by Special Guest Companion Holly Mac as we discuss "The Silurians", the second serial from Doctor Who Season 7 in 1970, featuring Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, Caroline John as Liz Shaw, and the first appearance of the Silurians!

In this episode, Jesse, Holly and I discuss things like embracing the greatness of the new baseball season, Holly passing her teaching exam, why you should call "Doctor Who and the Silurians" only "The Silurians", giving a special shoutout to Xan Sprouse for going to Roald Dahl Plass in Cardiff and ordering pizza under the name "Torchwood", finally getting episode titles for the upcoming Series 14/Season 1, only getting two new writers for the upcoming season, the flipping of the script by having the older generation of Silurians wanting peace and the younger generation wanting war, Geoffrey Palmer as Captain Hardaker in "Voyage of the Damned", the BBC graphics department screwing up the serial title, "The Silurians" only surviving in black-and-white until the 1990s, non-speaking cameos by members of the production team, the Silurians returning 50 years later in "The Hungry Earth" that was set in 2020, Barry Letts changing the ending from the Doctor being sad at the loss of the Silurians' knowledge to being disgusted by their murder at the hands of the Brigadier and UNIT, Jesse's digression about the Barbie movie, Liz being told by the Doctor and the Brigadier that she can't go into the caves, Liz being let down as a character by the writing, wondering if the Doctor had tunnel vision about saving the Silurians to the exclusion of all else, Jesse wishing Malcolm Hulke had fleshed out the global pandemic subplot more, the Doctor building Bessie because he's stuck on Earth, Doctors Lawrence, Quinn, Meredith, and Major Baker all being horrible people, being happy that the anti-vaxxer Dr. Lawrence died from his own ignorance, the uneasiness between the Doctor and the Brigadier in these early days, the Silurians getting a major makeup and costuming upgrade in the Steven Moffat era, the moment when the Brigadier realizes he needs to go against the Doctor and kill the Silurians, wondering what happened to the Third Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver in this story, our favorite quotes of the episode, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, new listener feedback from Dave Proctor and Sandi from Oregon, Ace meeting the Tenth Doctor, our upcoming tenth anniversary, and more!
