NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 296: "The Seeds of Death" Is Up!

"You sent a signal from Earth?"
"We sent up a satellite. That signal has sent your fleet into a false orbit!"
"The heat of the sun will kill them! You have destroyed our entire fleet!"
"You tried to destroy an entire world."
-- Slaar and the Second Doctor, Doctor Who: "The Seeds of Death"

Hello again, everyone! My partner in time Jesse Jackson and I are back with a new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast! This time, we're joined by special guest companion John Takacs as we discuss "The Seeds of Death", the fifth serial from Doctor Who Season 6 in 1969, featuring Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor, Frazer Hines as Jamie McCrimmon, Wendy Padbury as Zoe Heriot, and the return of the Ice Warriors!

In this episode, Jesse, John and I discuss things like finally getting John back on the podcast, John's YouTube channel, Jesse preferring "The Krotons" to "The Seeds of Death", what John likes about "The Seeds of Death", the original big, lumbering Ice Warrior design, script editor Terrance Dicks rewriting Episodes 3 and 6 because he considered the original ending lackluster, how Brian Hayles' scripts differed from his original story breakdown, Patrick Troughton not appearing in Episode 4, the rocket footage in Episode 5, Wendy Padbury crawling through wet paint in the leather trouser suit she just bought, the Doctor and his companions manning a rocket to the moon despite having no astronaut training, the Doctor once again doing his best "Batman Exit" disappearance, the Second Doctor showing his darker side by killing Slaar and the Ice Warriors, John's defense of the cowardly Fewsham, Fewsham's somewhat-redeeming moment by duping Slaar into revealing his invasion plans over an open channel, Miss Kelly and Zoe probably getting more scenes together if the story was written in the modern era, wondering who Professor Eldred was going to get to man his side-project rocket before the Doctor and his companions showed up, Eldred giving Commander Radnor "I told you so" looks, Slaar's inherently-flawed invasion plan using a virus that could be destroyed by rain water, the actors having fun with the huge piles of spray foam, the Grand Marshall calling out Slaar for killing everyone on the moonbase who could operate the T-Mat that was a key element of their invasion plan, our favorite quotes of the story, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, new feedback from Holly Mac, Dave Proctor and Sandi from Oregon, Holly Mac returning to talk "Paradise Towers", and more!

NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 295: "The Krotons" Is Up!

"But how did you know the machine would dissolve?"
"Hmm? Well, the machine was eighty percent tellurium, Zoe, and tellurium is soluble in sulfuric acid."
"But the machine wasn't pure tellurium!"
"No, well, the acid wasn't pure sulfuric acid...but it worked!"
-- Zoe Heriot and the Second Doctor, Doctor Who: "The Krotons"

Hello again, everyone! My partner in time Jesse Jackson and I are back with a new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast! This time, we discuss "The Krotons", the fourth serial from Doctor Who Season 6 in 1968-69, featuring Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor, Frazer Hines as Jamie McCrimmon, Wendy Padbury as Zoe Heriot, and Philip Madoc as Eelek!

In this episode, Jesse and I discuss things like Jesse getting competition on the Bruce Springsteen podcast front, "The Krotons" being Robert Holmes' first Doctor Who script, The Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe being one of the best TARDIS teams ever, Philip Madoc's many Doctor Who appearances, Terrance Dicks developing "The Krotons" with Robert Holmes as a personal project in case other scripts fell through, the Krotons being written with the intent of replacing the Daleks as the Doctor's main nemesis, the original plans for Frazer Hines to leave Doctor Who with this story and being replaced by another male companion named Nik, Wendy Padbury's impractical PVC dress, the Doctor's competition with Zoe to get the higher score on the Krotons' learning machine, Zoe getting the spotlight with the Doctor instead of Jamie, Zoe being far more likeable than Adric, the Doctor using the HADS (Hostile Action Displacement System) to keep the TARDIS from being destroyed, Thara wanting the Gonds to rebel against the Krotons while his father Selris is content with the status quo, Eelek seizing power from Selris only to be a total coward, Robert Holmes envisioning the Krotons as crystalline aliens instead of robots, the Krotons' dumb idea of taking the smartest Gonds away to power their spaceship over decades instead of breeding smarter Gonds, Beta and Jamie making acid without knowing what the hell they're doing, whether Russell T Davies should bring the Krotons back in the modern era, our favorite quotes of the story, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, new feedback from Holly Mac, Dave Proctor and Sandi from Oregon, the long-awaited return of John Takacs to Next Stop Everywhere, and more!

THE FANDOM ZONE 277: "Home" Is Up!

"Yes, well, let’s be sure not to repeat the mistakes of Talos and Fury, and leave love and friendship out of this. I will use you, and you will use me, and together we’ll make this planet safe for both our people."
-- Sonya Falsworth to G'iah, Secret Invasion -- "Home"

Hello again, everyone! It's time for another new episode of The Fandom Zone Podcast!  This time, DJ Nik and I discuss "Home", the final episode of Secret Invasion, featuring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, Emilia Clarke as G'iah, and Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik!

In this episode, DJ Nik and I talk about things like my being able to get a Bluesky account, Secret Invasion telling a large-scale story on a small-scale TV budget, my still not understanding why Nick Fury didn't call members of the Avengers for help, hoping the "Skrulls are fugitives on Earth" status quo change doesn't get dropped and forgotten, Secret Invasion providing zero lead-ins to The Marvels, Nik's thoughts on the Worst MCU TV Series So Far, the not-unexpected twist of Nick Fury being G'iah, when the switch between Nick Fury and G'iah/Nick Fury probably happened, Gravik being overconfident and trying to savor his moment with "Nick Fury", the far too brief Super-Skrull Slugfest between G'iah and Gravik, G'iah becoming the most powerful character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wondering if Sonya Falsworth is trying to set up MI13 as the British version of the Avengers, Raava/Rhodey forgetting to check her six, the Skrulls being "hunted and feared by the world they have sworn to protect" instead of the X-Men, wondering if President Ritson will be used to set up the MCU version of the "Dark Reign" storyline, Varra giving Nick Fury an ultimatum to love her in her natural Skrull form, wondering if Varra will appear in The Marvels, the complete lack of tension in this series, our favorite quotes of the episode, new Fandom Zone Fanmail from Jesse Jackson, looking forward to our upcoming discussion of Loki Season 2, and more!

GHOSTWOOD 126: "Inland Empire" is Up!

"I figured one day I'd just wake up and and find out what the hell yesterday was all about. I'm not too keen on thinkin' about tomorrow...and today's slipping by."
-- Nikki Grace, Inland Empire

It is happening again...My amazing co-host Xan Sprouse and I are back with a new episode of Ghostwood: The Twin Peaks Podcast!  In this final (?) episode, we finally discuss Inland Empire, the 2006 psychological thriller film directed by David Lynch, featuring Laura Dern as Nikki Grace/Sue Blue, Jeremy Irons as Kingsley Stewart, Justin Theroux as Devon Berk/Billy Side, and Harry Dean Stanton as Freddie Howard!

LET'S ROCK

In this episode, Xan and I discuss things like the past seven years of Ghostwood bringing us closer together as friends, where we've been for the past three months, the strange coincidence of 126 being our Inland Empire episode number, Inland Empire being the David Lynch film that disturbs Xan the most, Grace Zabriskie being great at playing uncomfortable characters, running down the various Twin Peaks and David Lynch veterans in this film, Inland Empire being the first Lynch feature shot on digital in standard definition, what the film's title actually refers to, Axxon N. originally being planned as a 9-episode mystery drama series for David Lynch's website, Lynch introducing screenings of the film with a quote from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad that included the words "We are like the dreamer who dreams and then lives in the dream", Inland Empire having a very limited theatrical run, Nikki's bizarre encounter with her new neighbor Visitor #1, Nikki's husband Piotrek not being happy that Nikki got her movie role, Nikki and Devon's appearance on The Marilyn Levens Starlight Celebrity Show, the movie On High in Blue Tomorrows being a remake of a movie that was never finished that was based on a Polish folk story said to be cursed, the mysterious Valley Girls, Sue and Smithy's backyard party, Sue's encounter with Visitor #2, Smithy beating Sue because she's pregnant and he can't father children, Sue dying on Hollywood Blvd. with a bunch of street people, Sue's reality transitioning back to Nikki's, Nikki shooting the Phantom and kissing the Lost Girl, the Lost Girl being reunited with her family, the end credits sequence where the Valley Girls dance to Nina Simone's "Sinnerman", former Playboy centerfold Dorothy Stratten, this film being David Lynch's commentary on infidelity, Inland Empire not being as rewatchable as other David Lynch films, the glaring absence of Angelo Badalamenti in this film, why we're ending Ghostwood: The Twin Peaks Podcast, hoping our Ghostwood listeners join us over on Drunk Cinema, the two best ways to end a Twin Peaks podcast, and more!

My partner in time Jesse Jackson and I are back with a new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast! This time, we provide our commentary track for "Hell Bent", the twelfth episode of Doctor Who Series Nine from 2015, featuring Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, Donald Sumpter as Lord President Rassilon, Maisie Williams as Ashildr, and the departure of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald!

In this episode, Jesse and I discuss things like Jesse watching Secret Invasion while he was supposed to be working, originally discussing "Hell Bent" back in Episode 048 from December 2015, the return of the anti-technology Gallifreyans living outside the Citadel, director Rachel Talalay returning for the upcoming special "The Star Beast", Donald Sumpter and Maisie Williams on Game of Thrones, Clare Higgins as Julia Cotton in the first two Hellraiser movies, why we're only watching "Hell Bent" and not the previous episode "Heaven Sent", Timothy Dalton being unavailable to reprise Rassilon, the great shot of the Doctor facing off against a huge gun mounted on the front of a fighter, the Doctor not being interested in the Time Lords until Rassilon shows up, the General and his troops siding with the Doctor over Rassilon, wondering what happened to Rassilon after he was exiled from Gallifrey, the Doctor's desperation to keep Clara alive after the events of "Face the Raven", the Doctor forcing the General to regenerate by shooting him, why the Doctor is still angry over Clara's death after spending 4.5 billion years inside the Confession Dial trap, the Doctor's casual revelation "Oh, it's Me", Ashildr's argument that the Doctor is the Hybrid, that awkward moment when Clara still doesn't have a pulse, the Twelfth Doctor getting a new Sonic Screwdriver to sell some toys, Clara getting her own TARDIS, new feedback from Dave Proctor and Sandi from Oregon, watching "The Krotons" in our next episode, bringing our podcast full circle with a Twelfth Doctor discussion, and more!
