Ruby Rose Leaves BATWOMAN, Show Will Recast for Season 2

Time for Gotham City to fire up the Bat Signal for a new Scarlet Knight.

Deadline is reporting that Batwoman star Ruby Rose is leaving the CW Arrowverse series after just one season.  The series is expected to return for Season 2 after recasting a new LGBTQ actress in the lead role of DC Comics' Batwoman/Kate Kane.  The series produced 20 of its planned 22 episodes, after Season 1 was cut short due to the Coronavirus crisis.

"I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season," said Rose in a statement.  "This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles."

She continued, "I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created.  Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me.  Thank you to everyone who made season one a success – I am truly grateful."

Rose, 34, is an Australian model, DJ, recording artist, actress, television presenter, and former MTV VJ.  She came out as a lesbian at age 12, and has identified herself as genderfluid.  In 2015, she wrote, produced, and starred in the short film Break Free, a tribute to gender fluidity, which became a viral hit, garnering more than 25 million views on YouTube.  In addition, she's appeared in the films John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick 3: Parabellum as the assassin Ares, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage as Adele Wolff, The Meg, Pitch Perfect 3, and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.  Also, she has appeared on episodes of Orange is the New Black as Stella Carlin, Dark Matter, and Mr & Mrs Murder.

According to the article, "the two sides mutually decided to part ways after recently reflecting on the first season and its challenges", and the decision "is not related to the stunt injury she sustained during filming of Season 1, which left her facing paralysis and needing emergency surgery."

"Warner Bros. Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best," said Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV in a joint statement.  The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months."

Batwoman is currently expected to return to The CW for Season 2 sometime in January 2021.

CBS All Access Orders STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS Series Featuring Captain Pike's U.S.S. Enterprise

At long last, CBS All Access has decided to hit it.

Deadline has word that the CBS All Access streaming service has given a series order for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a spinoff from Star Trek: Discovery starring Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as First Officer "Number One"/Una, and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock.  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be CBS All Access' third live-action Star Trek series, after Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, which debuted earlier this year.

According to the article, "the new series will take the trio of Spock, Pike and Number One and the U.S.S. Enterprise almost right up to the reign of Captain Kirk."  The premiere episode, set not long after Discovery's Season 2 finale, will be written by Picard executive producer Akiva Goldsman from a story written with executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet.  Henry Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth will also executive produce the series, with Aaron Baiers, Akela Cooper and Davy Perez as co-executive producers.

Mount, Romijn and Peck will reprise their characters from Discovery's second season.  Mount first appeared as Captain Pike in the Season 2 opener "Brother", with Romijn's Number One debuting in "An Obol for Charon", followed by Peck's Lieutenant Spock in "Light and Shadows".

The three leads shared in the announcement via the following video on YouTube...

"When we said we heard the fans’ outpouring of love for Pike, Number One and Spock when they boarded Star Trek: Discovery last season, we meant it," commented Kurtzman.  "These iconic characters have a deep history in Star Trek canon, yet so much of their stories have yet to be told.  With Akiva and Henry at the helm, the Enterprise, its crew and its fans are in for an extraordinary journey to new frontiers in the Star Trek universe."

"This is a dream come true, literally," Goldsman said of Strange New Worlds.  "I have imagined myself on the bridge of the Enterprise since the early 1970s.  I’m honored to be a part of this continuing journey along with Alex, Henry and the fine folks at CBS."

"Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on Star Trek: Discovery last season," remarked CBS All Access’ Executive Vice President and Head of Programming Julie McNamara.  "This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to Star Trek."

Audible Announces Cast for Audio Production of Neil Gaiman's THE SANDMAN

Neil Gaiman will show you terror in a handful of dust...again.

Audible has announced the full cast for the upcoming audio production of Neil Gaiman's seminal DC Comics/VERTIGO series The Sandman.  Adapted and directed by Dirk Maggs, the production will cover the first three Sandman graphic novels, Preludes and Nocturnes, The Doll's House, and Dream Country.

With Gaiman serving as The Narrator, the production stars James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class, Split, His Dark Materials) as Morpheus/Dream, Kat Dennings (Thor, 2 Broke Girls) as Death, Michael Sheen (Good Omens, Tron: Legacy) as Lucifer Morningstar, Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Rocketman) as John Constantine, Riz Ahmed (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Venom) as The Corinthian, Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings, Black Panther) as Matthew the Raven, and more.  Here's the full list of performers (click to enlarge):

And look, there's even a handy press release...

Hailed by the Los Angeles Times Magazine as “the greatest epic in the history of comic books”, The Sandman changed the game with its dark, literary world of fantasy and horror - creating a global, cultural phenomenon in the process. At long last, Audible and DC present the first-ever audio production of the New York Times best-selling series written by acclaimed storyteller Neil Gaiman (who also serves as co-executive producer). Adapted and directed by multi-award-winner (and frequent Gaiman collaborator) Dirk Maggs, and performed by an ensemble cast with James McAvoy (It, Parts one and two, X-Men: First Class, Split) in the title role, this first installment of a multi-part original audio series will transport you to a world that re-writes the rules of audio entertainment the way that The Sandman originally re-defined the graphic novel.

When The Sandman, also known as Lord Morpheus - the immortal king of dreams, stories and the imagination - is pulled from his realm and imprisoned on Earth by a nefarious cult, he languishes for decades before finally escaping. Once free, he must retrieve the three “tools” that will restore his power and help him to rebuild his dominion, which has deteriorated in his absence. As the multi-threaded story unspools, The Sandman descends into Hell to confront Lucifer (Michael Sheen), chases rogue nightmares who have escaped his realm, and crosses paths with an array of characters from DC comic books, ancient myths, and real-world history, including: Inmates of Gotham City's Arkham Asylum, Doctor Destiny, the muse Calliope, the three Fates, William Shakespeare (Arthur Darvill), and many more.

A powerhouse supporting cast helps translate this masterwork into a sonic experience worthy of its legacy, including Riz Ahmed, Kat Dennings, Taron Egerton, Samantha Morton, Bebe Neuwirth, Andy Serkis, and more. Setting the stage for their performance is an unprecedented cinematic soundscape featuring an original musical score by British Academy Award winner James Hannigan. Fans will especially revel in a new twist for the audio adaptation: Neil Gaiman himself serves as the narrator. Follow him as he leads listeners along a twisting path of myths, imagination and, often, terror. Even in your wildest dreams, you’ve never heard anything like this.

The Sandman audio production is expected to be released on July 15, 2020.

Taika Waititi to Direct & Co-Write New STAR WARS Film

Here's hoping he doesn't initiate self-destruct during production.

To help celebrate May the Fourth Be With You, Lucasfilm has announced that popular New Zealand actor and filmmaker Taika Waititi will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film planned for theatrical release.

Waititi, 44, recently served as the voice of the bounty-hunting droid IG-11 in the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian, and also directed the Season One finale, "Chapter 8: Redemption".  His films include the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film Thor: Love & Thunder, Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit, and the original What We Do in the Shadows, which he co-directed with Jemaine Clement.

His acting roles include the Marvel Comics character Korg in Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Ragnarok, Adolf Hitler in Jojo Rabbit, Thomas Kalmaku in Green Lantern, and Viago in both the What We Do in the Shadows film and FX TV series.

Working with Waititi on the screenplay will be Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who received a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year on the three-time Oscar-winning film, 1917.  She was also a staff writer on the Showtime TV series Penny Dreadful.

In other Star Wars news, it was announced that Emmy-nominated writer Leslye Headland (Russian Doll, Bachelorette) is developing a new untitled Star Wars series for Disney+. Headland will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the series, which will join The Mandalorian and two other previously announced series.  One will be based on Cassian Andor’s life prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, while the other will follow the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and the original 1977 Star Wars film.

No release dates for either project were announced.
