BLACK PANTHER Becomes First Superhero Movie Nominated for Best Picture
Wakanda will no longer watch from the shadows.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the nominations for the 2019 for the 91st Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars. As many expected, the 2018 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Panther was nominated for Best Picture, becoming the first superhero film to receive the nomination in the major category.
Despite the Best Picture nomination, Black Panther received zero nominations in the acting, directing and screenplay categories. However, the film did receive seven nominations in total, for Best Picture, Best Production Design, Best Music (Original Score), Best Music (Original Song), Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing.
Meanwhile, Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War, which many fans consider to be a better overall film than Black Panther, received only one nomination, for Best Visual Effects. In addition, the critically-acclaimed animated superhero films Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Incredibles 2 received one nomination each for Best Animated Feature Film.
The 91st Oscars will air live on ABC on Sunday, February 24, 2019.
