Those reports about a live-action Aquaman? Looks like they're actually true.
After initial rumors that started in December and a report on Hitfix from three days ago, both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed that Hawaiian actor Jason Momoa will indeed be playing DC Comics character Aquaman/Arthur Curry in Zack Snyder's upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. An official announcement has yet to be made, but is expected next month at San Diego Comic-Con International.
The 34-year-old actor is best known as Khal Drogo on the HBO series Game of Thrones and as Ronon Dex on Stargate: Atlantis. Momoa also portrayed the lead role of Conan in the 2011 remake of Conan the Barbarian. He joins Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent, Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince and Ray Fisher as Cyborg/Victor Stone.
According to Hitfix, the worldwide destruction caused by General Zod's terraforming World Engine in Man of Steel will be addressed in Batman v Superman, especially by one person in particular. "Someone else who's not particularly happy about what happened in that film is Aquaman," states the article. "I'm not sure if that's the actual name they'll use or not, but what we're hearing is that he is not pleased about the World Engine and what it did to the Indian Ocean. He will not have a major role in the film, but he will make an appearance, and it definitely sets him up to return once Snyder gets to Justice League."
Created by Paul Norris in 1941's More Fun Comics #73, Aquaman is a founding member of the Justice League whose Atlantean mother fell in love with a lighthouse keeper named Tom Curry. Discovering as a youth that he could survive underwater and communicate telepathically with sea life, Arthur Curry eventually used his superhuman strength and swimming speed to become the defender of Earth's oceans and often assuming his destiny as the King of Atlantis.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is written by Chris Terrio from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Goyer, Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. The film is scheduled to arrive on May 6, 2016.
