"What are you doing?"
"Self-realization. I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, 'I drank what?'."
-- Mitch Taylor and Chris Knight, Real Genius
Okay, so good day, movie fans! My wonderful co-host Xan Sprouse and I are back with a beauty episode of Drunk Cinema! This time, we pay tribute to the late Val Kilmer as we watch Real Genius, the 1985 comedy directed by Martha Coolidge, featuring Val Kilmer as Chris Knight, Gabriel Jarret as Mitch Taylor, Michelle Meyrink as Jordan Cochran, and William Atherton as Professor Jerry Hathaway!
This time, Xan and I discuss things like Xan trying vegetarian meat loaf, Val Kilmer getting throat cancer and dying of pneumonia, Martha Coolidge's stable of actors, Kilmer's death pushing this movie up on our schedule, Real Genius being our third William Atherton movie, Jon Gries as Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite, Xan being a fan of composer Thomas Newman, buying alcohol when you're a college student in the '80s, Mitch's dad being dollar store Jeff Daniels, the Dude being part of Kevin Flynn, Jerry Hathaway getting his students to build a laser for the military industrial complex, the Shoe comic strip, the Erlenmeyer Flask from The X-Files, Chris Knight being the cool geek that you want to be, wondering why Mitch didn't steal the professor's cassette tape from the lecture where everyone was recording with cassette tapes, wondering how no one saw nor heard Lazlo's secret hydraulic system in the closet, Jerry having his own TV show, Kent's car looking like him, Mitch almost being statutory raped by an older woman, my being justified in calling Kent a total dick, wondering why Kent has braces so late in life, "God" telling Kent to stop playing with himself, the MythBusters proving that popcorn can't break glass, let alone move Jerry's house off its foundation, new Drunk Mail from Christine Peruski, finally completing the original Star Wars trilogy, and more!
